A die-hard Studio Ghibli fan from Brazil has spent five years creating a live-action tribute to the classic film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind called Wind Princess.
Despite receiving offers from Hollywood, Studio Ghibli has consistently declined to authorize a live-action adaptation of Nausicaa. As a result, Wind Princess remains an unofficial project. Scheduled to be released on October 20, 2023, the 16-minute film will be available on Chris Tex's YouTube channel. Tex aspires for this endeavor to capture the interest of Hayao Miyazaki and eventually pave the way for a full-length adaptation.
Over the past five years, a dedicated fan of Studio Ghibli has been tirelessly working on a project to bring his favorite movie to life in a unique and original way. The movie in question is none other than Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Nausicaa for short), which holds the distinction of being the first film created by Studio Ghibli. Chris Tex, hailing from Brazil, has poured his heart and soul into crafting a live-action adaptation of this beloved movie, paying homage to it with his own creative work titled Wind Princess.
Originally released in Japan in 1984, Nausicaa remains an iconic masterpiece in the repertoire of Hayao Miyazaki at Studio Ghibli. The film delves into the story of a sixteen-year-old girl named Nausicaa, who resides in a society devastated by a cataclysmic war that took place a thousand years ago, leaving the majority of the world as a perilous and poisonous jungle. Rather than perpetuating the cycle of warfare with the colossal insects that emerge from the jungle, Nausicaa embarks on a quest to discover a path where humans and creatures can harmoniously coexist. Nausicaa serves as the genesis of Miyazaki's renowned politically charged films that have garnered him immense acclaim.
Despite its enduring popularity, Studio Ghibli has consistently declined all offers for a live-action adaptation of Nausicaa. Numerous propositions from Hollywood have been rejected by the acclaimed studio. Additionally, Wind Princess, the film in question, lacks official endorsement, leaving uncertainty as to whether Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki are even aware of its existence. Three years ago, during a visit to Japan, Chris Tex attempted to arrange a meeting with the studio's staff but was unsuccessful. However, undeterred, Tex proceeded with the project.
Tex, a devoted anime enthusiast and a huge admirer of Miyazaki's works, felt deeply inspired to create his very own anime film, Wind Princess. This heartfelt project serves as a sincere tribute to the magnificent artistry of Hayao Miyazaki. It is important to note that Tex has no intentions of profiting from the film, since he did not obtain any official permissions or authorization to embark on this endeavor. Consequently, Wind Princess will not be available for streaming, theatrical release, or even as a Blu-ray edition, despite its captivating content.
Fortunately, Tex has devised an alternative plan that will allow enthusiasts to enjoy his creation. He plans to share the completed film exclusively on his YouTube channel! Though its release has faced unforeseen logistical obstacles and time-consuming delays, Tex recently unveiled a tantalizing teaser for the project on his channel a couple of years ago. However, after much hard work and dedication, Tex is elated to announce that he is finally prepared to share the fully-realized version of Wind Princess. Mark your calendars, as Tex has provisionally set the date of October 20, 2023, for the official release of this highly anticipated masterpiece.
Wind Princess, a film created by Tex and a team of 11 other talented individuals, has a duration of approximately 16 minutes. It has already been screened at the São Paulo Cultural Center in Brazil during a free event. The project, which commenced in 2016, has been a result of the hard work and dedication of the entire creative team. Tex's ultimate aspiration is for Wind Princess to capture the attention of renowned filmmaker Miyazaki, ultimately obtaining his approval and potentially paving the way for Tex to create a full-length Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind movie in the future. Starting from October 20, 2023, Wind Princess will be available for viewing on Chris Tex's YouTube channel (subject to change).
