Strong earthquake shakes western Texas with 53 magnitude

A powerful 53 magnitude earthquake jolted Mentone, Texas, at 4:30 am Wednesday, as reported by the US Geological Survey

At approximately 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey reported a 5.3 magnitude earthquake occurring near Mentone, Texas. According to the USGS, the earthquake had a depth of around 4.9 miles and its epicenter was located approximately 22 miles west-southwest of Mentone.

The earthquake's impact extended to Santa Teresa, New Mexico, located approximately 200 miles west of the earthquake's origin point, as confirmed by the National Weather Service in El Paso.

No injuries have been reported at this time. CNN has contacted the Loving County Sheriffs Office for additional details.

Mentone is in a sparsely populated area about 75 miles west of Odessa.
