Strays Could Make or Break the R-Rated Comedy for 2023
: The revamped video not only incorporates familiar scenes from the original trailer, like the dogs indulging in beer and mushrooms, but it also introduces a plethora of fresh footage amidst these moments. Alongside Jamie Foxx's Bug delivering an array of new foul-mouthed lines, other characters also contribute to the profanity-laden banter. Additionally, viewers can glimpse a touching scene featuring a discarded couch. The summer of 2023 has witnessed a remarkable resurgence of R-rated comedies backed by major studios. It all kickstarted with the highly anticipated release of No Hard Feelings, featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Andrew Barth Feldman, on June 23rd. The film's box office performance exceeded all expectations, grossing a staggering $82.6 million worldwide. Furthermore, it garnered praise from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, achieving a solid 70 percent approval rating overall.
Following the release of No Hard Feelings, the comedy Joy Ride, led by Ashley Park, hit the theaters on July 7. It received highly positive reviews and achieved a Certified Fresh score of 91 percent. However, despite its critical acclaim, the movie only managed to secure the sixth spot at the box office and earned a modest $12.9 million as of now.
The responsibility now lies with Strays to demonstrate once again that a 2023 R-rated comedy can achieve both critical acclaim and commercial success. If it manages to strike that balance, it could pave the way for a promising future for edgy studio films. Although it is uncommon for three such movies to be released in the same season in today's era, the success of Strays might lead to more of these films being sprinkled among the studio's blockbuster releases in the upcoming years.
