While every weapon in Starfield is functional right out of the box, adding modifications can greatly enhance their effectiveness in nearly any situation. However, modifying weapons does come with a cost, and the best upgrades are only accessible to players who are willing to invest significant time and effort.
Weapon modification in Starfield closely resembles that of Fallout 4, although there are a few differences to note. Players familiar with the latter game should have no trouble tinkering with their firearms here, but for newcomers to Bethesda games or those in need of a refresher, this guide will provide a comprehensive overview of the fundamental steps involved in creating and installing weapon modifications.
How to Mod Weapons in Starfield
To begin, players must locate a Weapon Workbench, commonly found in gun stores and armories. The Lodge features a comprehensive workshop in its basement, equipped with all types of workbenches, making it a convenient one-stop location. Additionally, players have the option to install a workshop module on their ship, providing crafting facilities while on the move.
Accessing a Weapon Workbench allows players to access the modding screen, which displays all guns available in their inventory. By selecting a specific gun, players can view the moddable weapon parts and the craftable mod pieces. To install a weapon mod, simply click on the desired option displayed on the screen and press the corresponding Install button located on the right side.
On the crafting screen, you'll find all the resource costs conveniently displayed in the upper right corner. This allows players to keep track of them easily while exploring. Accompanying each name of the tracked resources, you'll spot a magnifying glass icon.
Weapon mods in the game are primarily accessed through research projects. To gain access to these mods, players must visit a Research Station and invest the required resources as indicated in the Weapons projects list.
It is worth mentioning that advanced weapon projects demand players to allocate additional points into the Weapon Engineering skill within the Science tree. In addition to having enough skill points, players must also craft a sufficient number of weapon mods to unlock the higher tiers of the skill. It's important to note that this progression is not retroactive. Therefore, it is advisable to only craft mods after leveling up the Weapons Engineering skill to avoid wasting any valuable materials.
Starfield is available now on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
