Highlights

Starfield's Terrormorphs are a formidable and important foe, building on the groundwork laid by Fallout's Deathclaws.

The game immerses players in a thrilling mission where they encounter the Terrormorphs, creating an intense and atmospheric experience. These intriguing threats are seamlessly integrated into the game's story and stakes, with their unique abilities adding strategic depth to battles.

The Sci-Fi genre boasts numerous terrifying extraterrestrial species and creatures, many of which are part of the most beloved Sci-Fi franchises of all time. From the instantly recognizable Xenomorph from Alien, to the Arachnids from Starship Troopers, to the Rancors, Wampas, and Acklays from Star Wars, the Sci-Fi genre brims with formidable beasts. Joining this esteemed group are the Terrormorphs from Starfield.

Bethesda has a history of featuring imposing monsters, with Fallout's Deathclaws being the developer's most iconic creation. Although not the original creators of the Deathclaw, Bethesda was the first to present the creature in 3D, establishing their version as one of the most memorable monsters in gaming. However, Starfield's Terrormorphs may surpass them in greatness.

Starfield's Terrormorphs Improve On Deathclaws In a Few Big Ways

Fallout's Deathclaws have become an iconic presence in the gaming world, leaving a lasting impression on Bethesda fans. These creatures, with their dinosaur-like physique, formidable claws, and demonic horns, have always been visually striking in the Fallout universe. Their terrifying speed and readiness to attack make them even more intimidating. However, Starfield's Terrormorphs take the concept of Deathclaws to new heights, enhancing their formidability and importance.

In the early stages of Starfield, players are given enticing glimpses of an extraterrestrial species known as the Terrormorphs. The mere mention of their name serves as a clear warning that they pose a significant threat. NPCs waste no time in emphasizing this danger to the player repeatedly. A visit to the United Colonies museum on New Atlantis reveals an entire section exclusively dedicated to the history of Terrormorphs. It is revealed here that these creatures mysteriously emerged one day and rapidly wreaked havoc upon Londinium, a city that fell victim to their devastating rampage within a few short hours. It is also documented that wherever humanity ventures, Terrormorphs inevitably follow, typically appearing on colonized planets a few decades after human settlement.

Players will inevitably encounter their first Terrormorph, most likely during the UC Vanguard mission "Grunt Work." This mission effectively introduces the eerie alien threat, reminiscent of scenes from Aliens. Tasked with activating defenses in an abandoned facility, players navigate the halls and alleyways while the Terrormorph lurks, relying on the beeping of a motion-tracker to track its movements. The mission culminates in an intense, challenging, and atmospheric battle with the Terrormorph.

The magnitude of this mission surpasses any Deathclaw encounter in Bethesda's Fallout series. However, this is just the beginning of a questline centered around the Terrormorphs and an impending galaxy-wide invasion. While Deathclaws boast a more iconic and distinctive design compared to Starfield's Terrormorphs, the latter's integration into the game's story and the higher stakes it presents make it an undeniably intriguing threat. Additionally, fighting the Terrormorphs proves enjoyable. Although their attacks can be evaded with a well-timed Boost Pack jump, they possess entertaining abilities, such as the power to mind-control nearby allies. This prompts players to switch to an EM weapon and stun their turned allies, leaving them susceptible to attacks from the Terrormorph. This introduces a strategic layer to battles.

Starfield is available now on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
