Summary
Geordi La Forge's role as Chief Engineer faced challenges during the initial season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The show experimented with various characters fulfilling this position before ultimately promoting Geordi in season 2.
Initially, the creators of TNG had intended for the Chief Engineer to have a limited role. However, considering the size of the Galaxy-class USS Enterprise, multiple engineers were necessary. Additionally, finding a consistent actor for the role proved to be a challenge. As the show progressed into season 2, Geordi La Forge underwent character development, advancing to the rank of full Lieutenant and assuming the role of Chief Engineer. With his remarkable skills, particularly his VISOR, Geordi became an indispensable member of the Enterprise crew.
Geordi La Forge, played by LeVar Burton, is best known as the Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, his journey to this position was not immediate. The show had a bit of a shaky start after premiering in 1987 under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart. Geordi was introduced as one of the main characters but his role on the ship was not clearly defined in the first season, leaving the show uncertain of how to utilize his character.
TNG had a difficult time finding a suitable character to fill the shoes of James Doohan's Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, who held the important position of Chief Engineer on Star Trek: The Original Series. Throughout the first season of TNG, there were various Chief Engineers and Assistant Chief Engineers before finally promoting Geordi to the role of Chief Engineer at the start of the second season. During the first season, Geordi held the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and served as the ship's helmsman. This resulted in most of the main characters being concentrated on the bridge, often leaving characters like Geordi and Lt. Tasha Yar, played by Denise Crosby, with limited involvement.
Why Star Trek: TNG Season 1 Had 4 Chief Engineers Before Geordi
In Star Trek: The Next Generation, the USS Enterprise is portrayed as a much larger Galaxy-class version of the ship. It is implied that this ship occasionally required multiple Chief Engineers. This concept is mentioned by First Officer Commander William Riker in the episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before." Originally, the creators of TNG had envisioned a smaller role for the Chief Engineer, with most of the main action taking place on the bridge or on other planets. However, they faced challenges in staffing and finding a consistent actor for the role.
The second episode of TNG, titled "The Naked Now," introduces Lt. Commander MacDougal as the Chief Engineer, along with Jim Shimoda as the Assistant Chief Engineer. However, neither character appears again after this episode. The next Chief Engineer to appear is Lt. Commander Argyle, who is seen in episodes "Where No One Has Gone Before" and "Datalore." Following Argyle, Lieutenant Logan assumes the position and conflicts with Geordi when La Forge is temporarily in charge of the Enterprise in "The Arsenal of Freedom." Finally, Lt. Commander Leland T. Lynch makes an appearance in "Skin of Evil," and is most notable for always insisting on announcing his full name when answering a call.
Geordi's Original TNG Role & How His Character Evolved
Geordi La Forge initially appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation donning a red command uniform, different from the operations gold attire he would later wear for seasons 2-7. During his time as the conn officer in season 1, Geordi played a key role in investigating the deaths of the SS Tsiolkovsky crew in the episode "The Naked Now." Unfortunately, he became infected with polywater intoxication, unwittingly transmitting it to the rest of the crew. In "The Arsenal of Freedom," La Forge had his first opportunity to command and successfully led the Enterprise's stardrive section. Moreover, his unique ability to perceive infrared and ultraviolet light through the VISOR proved invaluable during various away missions.
It was not until the onset of TNG season 2 that Geordi La Forge truly blossomed as a character. Following his promotion to full Lieutenant and Chief Engineer in the episode "The Child," La Forge's role expanded significantly. He showcased his understanding and intelligence as a leader, in addition to his resourcefulness as an engineer, capable of devising innovative solutions on the fly. Geordi went on to become an indispensable member of the Enterprise crew, establishing the convention of having a dedicated Chief Engineer as a central character in nearly every subsequent Star Trek series.
