The couple began their relationship while he was playing for the Las Vegas Raiders and got married in March 2023. Shortly after their wedding, Waller was traded to the New York Giants, forcing them to relocate across the country.
"I received the call about 12 hours after we got back home," Waller shared with The Post. "It's definitely not the ideal way to start married life. But resisting change is never a good idea."
The athletes embraced their situations, with Plum focused on winning her second consecutive WNBA championship with the Las Vegas Aces.
"We are trying to figure out how we can learn and grow from this situation," he expressed to the outlet. "Instead of focusing on the negatives, let's shift our attention to the positive outcomes that can arise from it."
In January, Waller posted a TikTok video of himself dancing and lip-syncing to a remix of The Delfonics song "Think It Over," with text overlay saying, "When ya girl bout to leave you." His caption read, "Stay strong kings!!! #fyp #explore #men #heartbroken."
Editor's P/S:
The breakup of Kelsey Plum and Darren Waller, two prominent athletes in their respective sports, is a disheartening reminder of the challenges that even the most seemingly compatible couples can face. Plum's emotional Instagram post and Waller's cryptic social media activity suggest that the separation was a difficult decision for both parties.
The couple's whirlwind romance and subsequent marriage, followed by Waller's trade to a team across the country, created a significant strain on their relationship. The long distance and demanding schedules of their professional lives likely took a toll on their ability to nurture their connection. It is also worth noting that this is not the first time Waller has spoken about relationship struggles; his TikTok video in January hinted at a potential breakup. While the reasons for their divorce remain private, it is clear that the couple's individual journeys and the pressures of their athletic careers played a role in their decision to part ways.
