Is there a Squid Game Season 2 release date?

Squid Game Season 2 is set to be released in late 2024, although an official date has not been announced. According to What's on Netflix, filming for the second season will commence in July 2023 and span a duration of 10 months.

Season 1, which reportedly took Dong-hyuk 10 years to write, will fortunately not require as much time for this season.

In response to the question, Ted Sarandos, Netflix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer, confirmed the return of the popular series, stating, "Absolutely. The Squid Game universe is only just beginning."

While the renewal has been confirmed, fans may experience a delay before they can indulge in another round of twisted childhood games. In November 2021, director Hwang Dong-hyuk mentioned that he is currently in the "planning process" of the show's second season.

According to the Korea Times, he informed Korean broadcaster KBS that he is currently in discussions with Netflix regarding Season 2 and Season 3. He mentioned that they will reach a decision shortly. Netflix officially announced Season 2 in June of the previous year and shared a teaser video with the caption "Red light... GREENLIGHT!" Additionally, star Lee Jung-jae confirmed in February 2023 that filming for Season 2 will commence this Summer.

Here’s hoping that means the wait won’t be too long.

In a recent interview with Deadline, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk hinted at the possibility of bringing back deceased characters in Season 2, teasing the inclusion of flashbacks or episodes set in the earlier stages of the game.

"I deeply regret the deaths of numerous characters, especially those who were beloved. I apologize for how easily I ended their lives; I was not expecting this outcome," he confessed to Reuters, expressing a desire to bring back Ji-young, even though her best friend, Sae-byeok, also perished.

However, considering the way Season 1 concludes, we anticipate a complete overhaul of the cast for Season 2. Although it is unlikely, the director has expressed interest in having Leonardo DiCaprio join the series."

In terms of unfamiliar faces, the second season has enlisted additional actors in ambiguous roles. These include Kang Ha-Neul, Yim Si-Wan, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun.

Editor's P/S

As a Gen Z fan, I am incredibly excited about the upcoming second season of Squid Game. The first season was a global phenomenon, and I am eager to see what the next chapter in the story will be.

I am particularly interested in seeing how the show will explore the themes of class inequality and social injustice that were so prevalent in the first season. I think these themes are more relevant than ever in today's world, and I am curious to see how the show will address them.

I am also excited to see how the show will develop the characters. In the first season, we were introduced to a wide range of complex and well-developed characters. I am eager to see how these characters will evolve in the second season and how they will interact with each other.

Overall, I am very excited about Squid Game Season 2. I think it has the potential to be even better than the first season, and I can't wait to see what the show has in store for us.
