After spending years on the sidelines, Spyro the Dragon, the beloved star of the gaming world, may be making a triumphant return as a guest character in Crash Team Rumble. Developer Insomniac, known for their impressive work on the Ratchet and Clank series and Marvel's Spider-Man, initially gained recognition with their groundbreaking release of the first Spyro the Dragon game for the original PlayStation in 1998. Spyro, with his witty and sassy personality, quickly became one of PlayStation's iconic mascots, eventually making appearances on other platforms over the years. Throughout his journey, Spyro delighted fans with numerous sequels, participated in a more serious reboot series called the Legend of Spyro trilogy, and even gave rise to the popular spin-off franchise, Skylanders.
Unfortunately, Spyro's flame began to dim, and the franchise entered a prolonged period of inactivity, with only a brief revival through the release of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy in 2018. This remastered collection of the original Spyro games, developed by Insomniac, garnered enough success to fuel speculation about a brand-new adventure featuring the spirited dragon. More recently, hopes were reignited when Activision updated their social media banner to feature Spyro earlier this year. While there is no official confirmation of a new Spyro the Dragon game currently in development, it seems that our beloved character may be making an unexpected comeback, possibly with the assistance of another iconic PlayStation character.
Twitter user and YouTuber KrystalVixon, who focuses on Spyro content, recently discovered intriguing details in the concept art and inaugural Battle Pass of Crash Team Rumble. These details suggest that Spyro may make a guest appearance in Crash's new multiplayer battle royale game, which is free-to-play. In the background of the "Dragon Vision" banner, which will be unlocked in the battle pass's 71st tier, there are two crystal dragon statues resembling the ones from the first Spyro The Dragon game. The name "Dragon Vision" itself could also indicate Spyro's presence, although it is worth mentioning that dragons have appeared in the Crash Bandicoot series before.
Furthermore, this is not the first indication that Spyro the Dragon might appear in Crash Team Rumble. On the game's official website, there was a banner featuring emblems of characters that were not initially included in Crash Team Rumble's launch line-up. One of these emblems resembles Spyro's wing, and another could represent Ripto, Spyro's long-time nemesis.
If Spyro the Dragon does join Crash Team Rumble, it would be fitting considering the shared history between him and Crash Bandicoot. Both mascots debuted on the original PlayStation and were later acquired by Activision. Over the years, Crash and Spyro have crossed paths multiple times through collaborations like Skylanders and a series of Game Boy Advance spin-offs in the early 2000s. While there is no official confirmation yet, there is a possibility that Spyro the Dragon will make a long-awaited return to the gaming world, albeit in a supporting role. Crash Team Rumble is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
