Following the confirmation of Venom's involvement in the game at Sony's PlayStation Showcase event, many fans had speculated whether Insomniac would explore their own version of the iconic Black Suit storyline. The trailer for the game immediately addresses this speculation as it shows Peter using a range of Symbiote-based abilities, including black tendrils that can be used for both attack and defense. As Peter's personality becomes increasingly corrupted by the Venom Symbiote, his aggression in both attitude and combat is noted by Miles Morales and Ganke Lee in the trailer. Lowenthal has teased that fans can expect a thrilling and captivating storyline for this version of Peter Parker.

During a panel discussion at MomoCon 2023, the voice actor for Spider-Man shared an interesting insight into his performance as the Symbiote-infused superhero. According to him, Peter's reliance on the Venom symbiote could be directly compared to an addiction, and he and the team took inspiration from studying the behaviors associated with addiction. While acknowledging that addiction is a complex issue with varying levels and nuances, the actor believes that this approach provided a simple yet effective way to understand and portray Peter's struggle with the symbiote.

The team behind Spider-Man 2 aimed to ground Peter's personal struggles and anger in reality, even while incorporating fantastical elements. Lowenthal, who plays Peter, discusses how he delved deeper into his performance during the darker moments of the game. He notes that he typically plays upbeat heroes, but had to work harder to convey the emotional depth required for this role. The team also made a point to differentiate between Peter's normal demeanor and his detached, symbiote-infused alter ego. Lowenthal hints that there is much more to come in the game than what has been shown in the gameplay trailer, leaving fans eager to see how Peter's character arc will unfold.
