Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood come together in a unique twist as they find themselves solving a murder in the highly anticipated Netflix original film, Once Upon a Crime. Based on the highly acclaimed novel Akazukin, Tabi no Tochu de Shitai to Deau by Aito Aoyagi, this movie follows Red Riding Hood as she unravels crimes from beloved fairy tales, including Cinderella and Hänsel and Gretel. Directed by Yuichi Fukuda, Once Upon a Crime will be available to stream on Netflix starting September 14th. Get a sneak peek of this enchanting film in the newly released trailer, where Red Riding Hood and Cinderella meet, attend a grand ball, and embark on their thrilling investigation into a murder linked to Cinderella's iconic glass slippers.
In addition to presenting these renditions of Cinderella and Red Riding Hood,
Once Upon A Crime Looks Perfect For Grimm & Once Upon A Time Fans
, the trailer also showcases the introduction of the Prince. At the ball, he gracefully dances with Cinderella, while receiving unwavering support from Red Riding Hood. However, later on, the Prince finds himself in a predicament as he is unjustly accused of murder. Despite fiercely asserting his innocence, he is apprehended and taken away in handcuffs.Once Upon a Crime has the potential to address the void left by the conclusion of Once Upon a Time and Grimm, both beloved TV shows that added a contemporary twist to beloved fairy tales. Similar to Once Upon a Time, where Snow White and Red Riding Hood formed a strong friendship, and Rumplestiltskin played various roles such as being Peter Pan's father, the Crocodile for Captain Hook, and the Beast for Belle, Once Upon a Crime takes a similar concept. This new series brings together Cinderella and Red Riding Hood, who not only develop a deep bond but also assume the roles typically associated with other characters in their own fairy tales.
The meeting of these characters is exciting, but the main focus of the Once Upon a Crime trailer is the murder investigation. Grimm successfully balanced being a police procedural with fantastical fairy tale elements, and Once Upon a Crime can achieve a similar balance by featuring familiar fairy tale characters as well as grounding itself as a procedural thriller.
If Once Upon a Crime is well-received, it could pave the way for future movies where Red Riding Hood solves crimes from other fairy tales, just like in the source material. It could be compared to Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot novels and films, or Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson's Knives Out films, where each story is a different case with a different set of characters, but always with the same detective as the protagonist solving the case. Once Upon a Crime has the potential to become the start of a new murder mystery franchise for Netflix, centered around fairy tales.
