Spain dismissed any notion of discontent or disharmony within their team by convincingly defeating Costa Rica 3-0 in their first match of the World Cup Group C. Prior to the tournament, Spain had faced challenges due to conflicts with their federation, resulting in several important players, including the influential Barcelona midfielder Patri Guijarro, opting out of participation this summer.

The players on display showcased a remarkable exhibition of possession-based play and smoothness, exemplified by the brilliance of Aitana Bonmati. However, the scoreline could have been more favorable had there been greater precision in finishing.

Spain exerted continuous pressure on their opponents, resulting in the opening goal in the 21st minute when Valeria del Campo accidentally scored an own goal from an Esther Gonzalez cross. In a remarkable six-minute span, Spain took complete control of the match. Bonmati skillfully evaded defenders and curled a beautiful shot into the far corner in the 23rd minute. Just four minutes later, Gonzalez scored by hooking the ball over the helpless goalkeeper Daniela Solera. Although Solera managed to save Jennifer Hermoso's weak penalty just before halftime, it was only a temporary relief for her.

Goals dried up after the break, with Solera playing a significant role in maintaining a respectable scoreline for the relatively inexperienced Costa Rica. However, any suggestion that Spain might be troubled by pre-tournament discord has been quickly dispelled.
