Developer Giant Squid has unveiled its latest project, the PS5-exclusive adventure game Sword of the Sea. The game appears to be a unique blend of the beloved titles, Journey and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. The reveal took place during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase on May 24, and the team is calling it their "most ambitious game to date."
The teaser trailer showcased Sword of the Sea's stunning art style, which is expected from the studio behind other visually striking games such as Abzu and The Pathless, released in 2020. Fans of Giant Squid will not be disappointed with the game's visuals, as they appear to be just as breathtaking as their previous titles.
The debut trailer of Sword of the Sea is sure to capture the attention of viewers with its stunning desert landscapes and partially covered ruins. The game's unique central mechanic involves sailing or hoverboarding through this mysterious world, reminiscent of popular endless runner mobile games Alto's Adventure and Alto's Odyssey. Set in an abandoned realm where the terrain flows in constant waves, players take on the role of the Wraith, a mysterious being tasked with bringing life back to the empty world. Explore ancient ruins, shipwrecks, and tombs to unravel the hidden cultures within, but beware of giant leviathans that may stand in your way.
Sword of the Sea is not solely reliant on its unique movement mechanic of traveling on hoverboards and navigating through "skatepark-like ruins" to captivate players. In the trailer, the game showcases stunning vistas that rely on color and lighting to convey the beauty of the land the Wraith is exploring. Fans of games like Journey and the Alto's series will undoubtedly be drawn in by Sword of the Sea's immersive atmosphere. Additionally, Giant Squid's new title may utilize the innovative features of the PS5's DualSense controller, as seen in The Pathless.
Giant Squid was founded in 2013 by Matt Nava, who previously served as the art director for Flower and Journey by thatgamecompany before departing to start his own studio. The artist's unique and recognizable art style from his prior projects seems to be making a comeback in Sword of the Sea. The game promises to combine the thrilling and enjoyable aspects of a skating game with the exploratory and meditative atmosphere that gamers have come to expect from Giant Squid.
Sword of the Sea is currently in development for PS5.
