Simon Cowell is making a return and this time, he is looking to form the next big boy band, 14 years after the incredible success of One Direction.
In a press release on Tuesday, June 4th, Cowell, who is 64 years old, expressed his belief that every generation deserves a superstar boy band. He mentioned that no boy band has achieved the level of success that One Direction did in over 14 years. Cowell also noted that the music industry tends to focus more on solo artists, so it often requires an outsider to bring a group together. He emphasized that there is nothing quite like the experience of being in a group, traveling the world, and performing for thousands of fans. Additionally, he highlighted that being in a boy band can serve as an excellent stepping stone for a successful solo career.
While serving as a judge on The X Factor in the 2000s, Cowell made headlines by creating One Direction in 2010, consisting of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Liam Payne. The group took a break in 2016, leading each member to pursue solo careers.
Cowell pointed out that many successful solo artists, such as Beyoncé, Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams, and even One Direction, started their musical journey in a group. He also mentioned how artists from High School Musical also began their careers in groups.
Cowell mentioned that creating a "great group" is like capturing "lightning in a bottle" - and he's optimistic about doing it again. In a bid to find new talent for a fresh band, the TV show judge unveiled a billboard in London on Tuesday.

“Simon needs you!” read the billboard, which also included a picture of Cowell’s face. “Future megastars wanted for new boy band. No time wasters.”
Cowell is set to hold auditions in England and Ireland during July and August, with stops in Newcastle, Liverpool, London, and Dublin. He is specifically searching for talented males aged 16-18 who have the passion, charisma, and star quality to create the next big boy band sensation. If you are interested in auditioning, you can complete an application on Cowell's website.
In a statement, Cowell expressed his excitement about the auditions, acknowledging the high level of risk involved. He admitted that the outcome is uncertain - they could discover an incredible group or they might not reach their goal. Cowell also mentioned the possibility of a low turnout at auditions, which could be awkward. Despite the unpredictable nature of the process, he finds it thrilling and that's why he is taking on this project.
As of right now, there are no plans to film Cowell’s journey to create a new music group as part of a current television show. However, the search is being filmed for a potential documentary.
