Marvel Studios' latest limited series, Secret Invasion, made its debut on Disney Plus last week. The highly anticipated show revolves around Nick Fury, former director of SHIELD, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson. Marvel fans are already buzzing with speculation, as Cobie Smulders hinted that her character Maria Hill's journey in the MCU might have come to an end.
Consisting of six episodes released weekly, Secret Invasion uncovers the alarming truth that shapeshifting creatures known as Skrulls have infiltrated Earth. These aliens possess the ability to assume the appearance of any human. In response to this imminent threat, Nick Fury rallies his allies to thwart the complete invasion of the planet and ensure humanity's survival. Embedded within Marvel Studios' Phase 5, the series explores the concept of multiple universes and challenges our beloved superheroes to discern friend from foe in various dimensions. For the first time in the MCU, viewers are granted an intimate glimpse into Fury's life and his dynamic relationship with Maria Hill, characters who have remained steadfast and integral since their introduction in Phase 1 of the cinematic universe.
But regardless of seniority, it appears that Maria Hill's battle against villains may have come to an end. In the finale of Secret Invasion, Hill and Fury reunite to face off against the Skrulls. However, amidst the escalating conflict, Hill is tragically shot by an alien disguised as Fury. In her final moments, she mistakenly believes that her closest ally and dearest friend has betrayed her. This event sets in motion the show's central conflict, which is expected to unfold throughout the rest of the phase. Recently, Smulders sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss her role in the MCU and promote Secret Invasion. When questioned about her character's fate, she confidently responds, "I believe this is the end," dispelling any speculation about the character's potential resurrection.
Smulders acknowledges that although she believes her journey in the superhero franchise has come to an end, she recognizes the possibility of unexpected twists due to the exploration of multiverse stories. Referring to her appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home as an alien, she highlights the element of surprise in her role. Addressing the disappointment of fans regarding her character's sudden demise, she expresses the feeling of loss as Maria's story was just beginning to unfold. While Smulders hopes fans will come to terms with this outcome, she appreciates the deep connection they have formed with the narrative and its characters. Reflecting on the rumors of her involvement in the upcoming film The Marvels, she emphatically states that she has no part in it. As a prominent figure in various MCU movies, Maria Hill remains one of the few Phase One characters still standing, but now she joins forces with the rest of the team to combat the Skrulls and protect humanity, leaving Fury behind.
Secret Invasion episode 1 is now streaming on Disney Plus, with new episodes releasing Wednesdays.
