Following the dramatic mid-season finale of Season 6 of My Hero Academia, it is now time for both heroes and villains to assess the losses incurred during the Paranormal Liberation War. The intense battle resulted in casualties for both sides, with Shigaraki Tomura/All For One managing to escape after inflicting significant damage on the heroes and tarnishing their reputation within the world of My Hero Academia.
The Paranormal Liberation War stands as one of the lengthiest and most gripping story arcs in My Hero Academia. It reaches its climactic point with a full-scale assault orchestrated by Japan's assembled Pro Heroes against the villain alliance known as the Paranormal Liberation Front. Divided into two teams, the heroes, led by the top-ranked Pro Hero Endeavor, launch an attack on the Jaku Hospital in an effort to prevent Shigaraki from fully awakening his powers. Simultaneously, the second team, commanded by the numbered heroes Hawks and Edgeshot, storms the secret base of the Paranormal Liberation Front located in the Gunga Mountains. While the heroes intended to catch the villains off guard and apprehend them in one swift motion, Shigaraki's emergence and the immense strength of Gigantomachia plunge the battlefield into utter chaos.
Midnight Was Just One of Many Fallen Heroes
On the heroes' side, the battle begins with the Jaku Hospital raid, where the first casualties occur. Mirko manages to prevent Shigaraki's awakening before his new body is completed. However, a mistake by My Hero Academia's hero X-Less results in the destruction of an unidentified machine, triggering an electric discharge that awakens Shigaraki. The first victim is X-Less himself, followed shortly by Crust, who sacrifices his life to protect Eraserhead, knowing that his Quirk is the only thing that can counter Shigaraki's dreadful Decay Quirk. It is later confirmed that Native, a Pro Hero previously seen in the Stain arc, and Funkman are also among the victims.
In the Gunga Mountains, the first casualty is Eel Boy, a hero with the ability to summon giant eels from his hands. While attempting to capture Mr. Compress and Himiko Toga, he is unexpectedly attacked from behind by the last surviving clone of Twice and stabbed in the back of the head. However, the majority of casualties occur when Gigantomachia begins his rampage, responding to Shigaraki's call. One notable victim is Midnight, a teacher at U.A. High, who tries to use her Somnambulist Quirk on Machia but is repelled by Mr. Compress. She is then ambushed and killed by a group of villains. The students later discover her lifeless body in the forest and mourn their loss, as her final request was for Yaoyorozu to create a powerful anesthetic to halt Machia's rampage. Majestic, who played a key role in protecting the students, is also lost in the battle.
Twice Was The Only Villain to Die
On the villains' side, the only one who suffers is Twice. The policy followed by the heroes is to avoid using lethal force, which is why Hawks' decision to kill Twice right at the start of the battle sparked controversy. However, the villain's Quirk, Double, had the potential to instantly shift the balance of the battle, overwhelming the heroes with sheer numbers. This is what ultimately led Hawks to make his regrettable choice. In the end, the battle results in the unfortunate deaths of nineteen Pro Heroes, while 16,929 soldiers from the Paranormal Liberation Army are apprehended. Sadly, Tomura manages to escape along with the remaining Near-High End Nomus, leaving the heroes to deal with the aftermath of this dramatic battle in the second half of My Hero Academia Season 6.
