Metro writer Dmitry Glukhovsky has recently been sentenced to eight years in prison for damaging the reputation of the Russian Armed Forces. This verdict comes at a time of increased political and military turbulence in the Russian Federation due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, Glukhovsky's sentencing takes an interesting turn.
The Metro franchise has a complex and extensive background. It revolves around the lives of individuals who inhabit underground subway systems in Russia following a devastating nuclear war. The initial installment, Metro 2033, is based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel of the same name. While the games took their own direction, Glukhovsky continued to write sequels to the book. Alongside his contributions to the franchise, Glukhovsky has also worked as a journalist and openly expressed his opposition to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Unfortunately, his vocal dissent seems to have had unintended consequences.
In June 2022, the Metro writer was ordered to be arrested by Russian authorities. This action stems from Glukhovsky's outspokenness against the war in Ukraine, which is considered a violation of the law that prohibits journalists from undermining Russia's armed forces. Just recently, Glukhovsky received a harsh sentence of eight years in prison for this offense. It is worth noting that he is among several journalists and politicians who have been convicted of similar crimes since the onset of the war. Interestingly, Glukhovsky was tried and sentenced in absentia, as he does not currently reside in Russia. Thus, the ruling by the Moscow courts is mostly symbolic in nature.
The war in Ukraine has caused unimaginable devastation to the country. Many video game studios based in Ukraine had to halt production or cancel projects as their developers joined the war effort. Tragically, Andrii "Nizrok" Korzinkin, a developer for Metro Exodus, and Vladimir "Fresh" Yezho, a developer for STALKER, lost their lives in the conflict.
In addition to developers fighting in the war, various companies have also stepped up to aid the people of Ukraine. THQ Nordic is providing shelter to refugees from the Ukraine War, while other companies organize charities and events to support those affected by the war. Dmitry Glukhovsky, the creator of the Metro series, has gone into hiding in Europe and his current whereabouts are unknown. Given the circumstances, it seems unlikely that he will be able to return to his homeland anytime soon.
Metro Exodus is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
