A close-up image of Adam Warlock's costume in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 confirms a dark theory about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director James Gunn introduced the beloved character in the Multiverse Saga through his final Guardians film. Wil Poulter portrays Adam Warlock, who initially played a villainous role but later redeemed himself and became an official member of the new Guardians of the Galaxy, led by Rocket Raccoon.
Although Marvel Studios is not holding their usual Hall H panel at the San Diego Comic-Con 2023, they have displayed some of the notable costumes from the Multiverse Saga, including Warlock's costume. Brandon Davis has shared detailed photos, giving viewers a close look at the ensemble, including the skull broach that adorns his cloak. See the photo below:
Adam Warlock's Cape Completes The High Evolutionary's Evil
Considering that Warlock was originally in the employment of the High Evolutionary, it is logical that he would also have been responsible for dressing Ayesha's son. Therefore, it can be inferred that the deliberate choice to place what appears to be either a raccoon or an otter skull in the center of Warlock's chest was made by the High Evolutionary.
Irrespective of whether it's a raccoon or an otter skull, what truly matters is the rationale behind it. Despite his appearance resembling that of a fully grown man, Warlock was still essentially a newborn in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It was highly inappropriate for him to wear such a gruesome accessory, but the High Evolutionary intended to use it as a means to provoke Rocket. Since Warlock was tasked with capturing the raccoon, the villain of the third installment was hoping that the sight of the skull would unsettle him.
If the skull belonged to a raccoon, it could be a foreboding message from the High Evolutionary about Rocket's impending demise. On the other hand, if it was an otter's skull, it would serve as a heart-wrenching reminder of Lylla's tragic fate - perhaps even her actual remains for maximum impact. Regardless of the truth, the High Evolutionary's intention was to provoke a strong emotional reaction from Rocket. This aligns with his penchant for engaging in psychological games, arrogantly assuming that he would always come out on top.
Although the theatrical version of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 left the High Evolutionary's fate uncertain, Gunn confirms that the alternate ending, which was not included in the final cut, is canon. This means that the villainous character is still alive within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and is currently imprisoned on Knowhere. Consequently, Marvel Studios retains the option to bring him back if future storylines call for his participation.
