The article contains spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher.
Summary
According to series creator Mike Flanagan, if the children in The Fall of the House of Usher had listened to Verna's warning like Lenore, their deaths would have been peaceful. Verna's warnings, although given with an air of resigned indifference, show genuine concern for Camille and her intelligence.
One exception exists: Verna takes matters into her own hands and orchestrates Frederick's brutal demise after he abuses his wife.
Mike Flanagan, the creator of The Fall of the House of Usher, clarifies a crucial point regarding the enigmatic Verna. Flanagan, known for his previous works such as The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, adapts the stories of Edgar Allan Poe to narrate the tale of a corrupt CEO of a pharmaceutical company named Roderick Usher (portrayed by Bruce Greenwood). Just as Roderick is being sued for his crimes, his children mysteriously and violently start to perish. The resurgence of Carla Gugino's character, Verna, is linked to these deaths in a memorable way.
Throughout the entire duration of the Netflix show, Verna consistently issues a warning that could have prevented the tragic fate of the Usher children. In response to a question from a fan on Tumblr, Flanagan confirmed that if Roderick's offspring had heeded Verna's warning, they would have met a peaceful demise. To illustrate this, the creator of the series used the peaceful death of Lenore (Kyliegh Curran) as an example of what could have occurred: "If the kids had listened to Verna's advice, they would have peacefully passed away, just like Lenore."
Flanagan's Verna Rule Works, Except For One Usher
Verna takes a different approach to delivering her warning to each of the Usher siblings. Usually, she casually mentions it without much enthusiasm or concern. She doesn't put much effort into convincing Leo or Tammy, for example. However, when it comes to Camille, Verna genuinely tries to prevent her from experiencing a violent death. This might be because Verna admires Camille for her intelligence.
In any case, if the children had followed Verna's advice, they would have experienced a peaceful death. Lenore, for instance, passes away from a simple tap on the head. The only objection to this is from Lenore's father, Frederick (played by Henry Thomas). Verna takes pleasure in Frederick's demise, as he becomes paralyzed and witnesses his body being essentially severed in half. While it is difficult to determine the absolute worst death considering the brutality of the others, Frederick's may be considered the second worst.
Verna plays an active role in orchestrating Frederick's death, implicating herself personally. It is challenging to feel sympathy for him, especially after he violently abuses his wife Morella (portrayed by Crystal Balint), even going so far as to extract her teeth with pliers. Frederick receives no warning, whether passive or otherwise. However, it is revealed by Flanagan that most characters in The Fall of the House of Usher had a quiet way out.
