Warning: Spoilers ahead for Secret Invasion episode 3. The Skrull rebellion in Secret Invasion has already proven that even beloved characters are not safe. Along with revealing that a long-standing character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is actually a Skrull, the show has also killed off a fan-favorite character who has been by Nick Fury's side for the past decade. In episode 3, another character appears to meet their demise while fighting against the Skrulls. However, the question remains: is this character truly dead?
Secret Invasion is a high-stakes spy thriller that raises the stakes for the MCU. While the conflict is on a global scale, with a faction of Skrulls seeking to take over the planet, it is also deeply personal for the characters involved. Nick Fury is not only married to a Skrull, but his closest ally of the past 30 years is also a Skrull, whose wife and daughter have become tied up in the rebellion. As the show unfolds as a spy thriller, both the rebels and those opposing them employ covert tactics to achieve their goals, leading to episode 3 where one character is shot by Gravik.
What Happened To G'iah In Secret Invasion Episode 3?
G’iah and her father Talos have frequently been in conflict for a considerable duration. Similar to Gravik, G’iah has grown restless due to the necessity of concealing her identity on Earth. She has joined the Skrull rebellion, granting refuge to fugitive Skrulls and also supporting Gravik as one of his covert agents in the field. Nevertheless, she has also been providing her father with vital information whenever she believes the potential loss of life is excessive. G’iah informs him about a bomb threat and the impending launch of nuclear bombs targeted at the United Nations. This particular event leads Gravik to uncover the identity of his mole.
During episode 3 of Secret Invasion, when G’iah attempts to flee the Skrull sanctuary, she is intercepted by Gravik and meets a fatal fate as she reverts from her human undercover persona to her Skrull form. This suggests that G’iah is presumed deceased, with neither Fury nor Talos aware of her fate.
Why It's Unlikely Secret Invasion Already Killed G'iah
It is highly improbable that G'iah has already perished in Secret Invasion. Although her mother's death occurred off-screen to create an emotional bond between her and her father again, and Maria Hill was also killed by Gravik after the bombing in the first episode, it would be in poor taste for Secret Invasion to eliminate one of its few prominent female characters halfway through the season. Currently, there are only three major female characters in the series: one is a frenemy of Fury, another is his wife, and the third is G'iah.
G'iah's premature demise is also unlikely due to Secret Invasion being primarily a spy thriller, despite it having global implications. It is more plausible that G'iah survives Gravik's gunshot and surprises him by providing assistance to her father and Fury later in the season. While her death could potentially serve as motivation for Talos to take stronger action against Gravik, the issue of "fridging" is a significant problem in comic book properties, as it involves killing off female heroes to propel male heroes forward. Secret Invasion has already, in essence, done this twice with the deaths of Soren and Maria Hill in the initial episode.
How G'iah Might Survive Her Wound
Additionally, there is the practical aspect that there are additional scenes involving G'iah, or at the very least, her human form, included in the Secret Invasion trailer that have yet to be seen in the initial three episodes. While it is plausible that these scenes were deleted or intentionally misleading by Marvel, they showcase the character wielding weapons and engaging in combat situations, indicating the possibility of their inclusion in the upcoming episodes.
Due to their shapeshifting abilities, Skrulls have the potential to survive a gunshot by continuously morphing into different forms to facilitate tissue regeneration. G’iah might attempt this method of self-repair. However, such a phenomenon has not been depicted in the series. The only Skrull known to possess exceptional regenerative abilities is Gravik, whose healing process is enhanced through experiments involving Extremis.
There are two alternative scenarios for G'iah following the shooting incident. Firstly, she may have been aware that her time providing information to her father was nearing its end, and deliberately allowed Gravik to capture and shoot her in a way that wouldn't be lethal. This would deceive Gravik into thinking she is dead, while giving her the advantage of surprising him later. Alternatively, G'iah may have also conducted experiments with DNA samples that could enable her to acquire superpowers like Gravik's plan to become a Super Skrull. This would lead to a tense standoff between them in future episodes, potentially making them the first Skrulls with enhanced abilities. In either case, G'iah survives to fight another day.
New episodes of Secret Invasion can be streamed every week on Disney Plus.
