When Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith were the subject of breakup rumors, Chris Rock allegedly tried to ask her out.
During the summer, reports would often circulate about me and Will getting a divorce. In one particular summer, Chris believed that we were indeed heading towards a separation," said Pinkett Smith, 52, in an interview with People published on Wednesday, October 11. "He called me and expressed his interest in taking me out."
Confused by Rock's intentions, Pinkett Smith mentioned that she couldn't understand why he was pursuing her when she was already married to Smith, 55.
"He asked, 'Aren't you and Will getting divorced?' I replied, 'No, Chris. Those are merely rumors,' she shared with the outlet. "He was shocked and quickly apologized. That was the end of it," she stated. Rock has yet to publicly address Pinkett Smith's allegations, which will be further expounded upon in her forthcoming memoir, Worthy, as reported by People.
Pinkett Smith and the star of King Richard began dating in 1995 and tied the knot two years later. Smith, who shares a son named Trey, 30, with his ex-wife Sheree Zampino, has two children Jaden, 25, and Willow, 22, with Pinkett Smith.
Although the exact date is undisclosed, Pinkett Smith separated from Smith in 2016, during which Rock attempted to ask her out.
“I believe that by 2016, we were simply worn out from our efforts," she stated during her interview with Today on Wednesday. "I think we were both stubbornly holding onto our ideals of what we thought the other person should become."
Although Pinkett Smith and Smith have not initiated divorce proceedings, they continue to lead separate lives. "I think it's just a matter of not being ready yet," she further explained on Today. "We are still trying to navigate our partnership and determine how to present it to others, you know? We haven't found the solution yet."
At the Academy Awards in the previous year, amidst the separation of Pinkett Smith and Smith, they encountered Rock once again. During his presentation at the Oscars in March 2022, Rock made a joke about Pinkett's shaved head, a result of her struggle with alopecia.
Smith, upon hearing this, fervently urged Rock to refrain from mentioning Pinkett Smith's name. He then proceeded to walk onto the stage and strike Rock. While Pinkett Smith was initially shocked by the now-famous slap, Smith has since offered an apology. As a consequence, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has imposed a 10-year ban on Smith from their events.
During a heated moment, he acted disproportionately, and both he and she acknowledge this. They agree that he overreacted," a source revealed exclusively to We in April 2022, mentioning that Pinkett Smith "wishes" her husband hadn't confronted Rock physically.
The source further explained, "She is not a woman who requires protection. His actions were unnecessary, as she is not someone who needs safeguarding. She is a resilient and outspoken woman who can handle her own battles. Nevertheless, she will continue to support him."
