In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the absence of Indy's son, Mutt Williams, is explained. [Spoilers ahead!]
Mutt, portrayed by Shia LaBeouf, first appeared in 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He was a 1950s greaser on a quest to find his kidnapped mother and sought assistance from the renowned archaeologist, Indiana (played by Harrison Ford). Indy ultimately reunited Mutt with his mother, only to discover that she is his ex-girlfriend Marion Ravenswood (portrayed by Karen Allen). It was revealed that Marion never informed Indy about their child.

Despite playing a crucial role in Crystal Skull, Mutt's character is absent in the 2023 sequel, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, even though the sequel is set 12 years after their initial meeting. It is revealed in the story that Mutt has passed away.
During a conversation with Helena Shaw (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge), Indiana is asked where he would go if he could use Archimedes' dial, a device believed to have the power to transport people through time. Indiana responds by saying that he would prevent Mutt from joining the military. He explains that Mutt's decision to voluntarily serve in Vietnam was simply meant to irritate him. The death of Mutt marked the beginning of the decline of Indiana and Marion's marriage.
Before the film's release on June 30, director James Mangold assured Entertainment Weekly in December 2022 that audiences would finally discover the fate of Mutt. (It had been announced five years earlier that LaBeouf would not be returning to his role.)
Recently, the 59-year-old director elaborated on his decision, expressing his fascination with introducing a female companion for Indiana. This new character takes the form of his goddaughter, Helena.
“I wanted to capture the incredible dynamic between Indy and a fearless female character,” expressed Mangold to Variety prior to the film’s debut. “My initial objective was to harness that electrifying energy, but considering the constraints, there were limitations in incorporating every individual into the frame.”
In 'Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull', Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf starred together. However, it was expected that LaBeouf, now 37, would not be returning for future installments. This decision came after he publicly expressed his criticism of the franchise in a 2010 interview with the Los Angeles Times.
"I feel like I failed to uphold the beloved and cherished legacy," LaBeouf admitted. "If I were to fail again, it would mean the end of my career. So this was a make or break situation for me. An actor's responsibility is to bring it to life and make it work, but I couldn't achieve that."
He then added, "I will probably receive a call, but it's important for him to hear this. I genuinely love him. My relationship with Steven [Spielberg, director of Crystal Skull] goes beyond our professional collaboration. I talk to him frequently enough to understand that my thoughts are not unreasonable. I would never disrespect him. I genuinely admire his genius and he has shaped my entire life. He has accomplished so much remarkable work that he shouldn't feel vulnerable about one film. However, when you fail, you fail."
Ford, who is currently 80 years old, gained attention when he strongly criticized LaBeouf for openly criticizing their movie. In a 2011 interview on the Today show, the renowned Star Wars actor candidly mentioned, "I believe I called him a complete idiot." He further emphasized the importance of actors supporting their films without making fools of themselves. Ford acknowledged LaBeouf's ambition, attentiveness, and talent, while recognizing that he is navigating a particularly challenging and distinctive situation. Currently, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" is being shown in cinemas.
