Simu Liu finally provides an update on the development of Shang-Chi 2 and reveals when he will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shang-Chi, one of the new heroes introduced in Phase 4 of the MCU, had his own film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its box office performance, the movie was still a success for Marvel Studios, paving the way for more adventures for the character.
Although it seemed obvious that there would be a sequel to Shang-Chi, there hasn't been much progress on it for almost three years. However, Liu himself recently addressed the situation on Threads, providing clarification on the development status of Shang-Chi 2 in response to a fan's inquiry.
According to Liu, he was informed that the project would come after Avengers, but Marvel Studios has continuously delayed it due to external factors beyond his influence. Nevertheless, Liu remains hopeful that he will have more substantial updates to share in the near future. It is worth noting that Marvel Studios has yet to comment on his remarks.
Everything We Know About Shang-Chi 2 So Far
Shang-Chi 2 currently does not have a release date, but there are some confirmed details regarding the MCU sequel. Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will be returning to write and direct the sequel as part of his overall deal with Marvel Studios. Additionally, there has been no new information about the Disney+ spinoff project.
In April 2023, Liu mentioned his desire to explore different aspects of his character in Shang-Chi 2. With the first film establishing the foundation of the titular hero, Liu hopes that the sequel will further develop not only his character but also the people in his life, particularly Katy, Xu Xialing, and Ying Nan. The sequel will likely delve deeper into the history of the rings, which are now in Shang-Chi's possession following his battle with Xu Wenwu.
Shang-Chi 2 is likely being delayed because of Cretton's involvement in directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, as well as the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. Considering the already busy schedules of Phases 5 and 6, it would be more advantageous for Shang-Chi 2 to be saved for Phase 7. Hopefully, Marvel Studios will provide more direct updates on Shang-Chi 2 before the year ends.
