Ottawa Senators center Shane Pinto suspended for 41 games by NHL due to violation of sports betting regulations

Ottawa Senators center Shane Pinto has received a 41-game suspension from the National Hockey League (NHL) for breaching the league's sports wagering regulations, as announced on Thursday. The league clarified that there was no evidence to suggest Pinto placed bets on NHL games.

Accepting the punishment, 22-year-old Pinto expressed his regret and issued an apology through an official statement provided by the team. He extended his apologies to the National Hockey League, the Ottawa Senators, his fellow teammates, the fans, the city of Ottawa, and particularly his family. Pinto acknowledged his accountability for his actions and expressed eagerness to return to the ice alongside his team.

The Senators, who have begun the season with a 3-3 record, are set to face the New York Islanders on Thursday night away from home, but will be without Pinto. The team revealed that further details came to light following the league's investigation into the matter, which concluded on Wednesday.

Shane, a highly respected member of our hockey club, is a charismatic and intelligent young man who unfortunately made regrettable choices leading to a suspension by the National Hockey League. We acknowledge his remorse for his mistakes.

In accordance with the NHL's regulations on gambling, the Ottawa Senators express their complete endorsement. Although disheartened by this situation, our entire organization firmly stands behind Shane and is dedicated to collaborating with him in order to provide the necessary assistance for him to address his challenges and contribute positively to our community.

We will gladly welcome him back to the organization and embrace him as a member of our own when the opportune moment arises and with the approval of the league. Pinto, who was selected by Ottawa in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft, did not participate in this season. As a newcomer last season, he attained an impressive record of 20 goals and 15 assists with the Senators.

CNN has reached out to the NHL to clarify the details around Pintos return as he is currently a restricted free agent.
