Shakira and her sons were not fans of the Barbie movie.

"My sons really didn't like it. They thought it made boys look weak. And I kind of see where they're coming from," said Shakira, 47, in an Allure cover story released on Monday, April 1. "I'm bringing up two boys. I want them to feel strong and also show respect for women."

In July 2023, a film was released that follows Barbie's journey from Barbie Land to the human world. In the movie, the iconic doll (played by Margot Robbie) and Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) discover that human women's lives are very different from those of toys, due to the influence of the patriarchy. Surprisingly, they learn that the patriarchy is not just about horses. The film was a huge success, earning over $1 billion at the box office and even receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

The singer, who has two boys named Milan (11) and Sasha (9) with her ex Gerard Piqué, shared her thoughts on pop culture. She expressed that she appreciates when pop culture empowers women, while also allowing men to play a role in protecting and providing for others.

She expressed her belief in empowering women with the necessary tools and confidence to achieve their goals without compromising their essence or femininity. According to her, men and women have different roles in society that complement each other, and this dynamic should not be overlooked.

Shakira went on to ask, "Why not distribute responsibilities to those who are capable and obligated to bear them?"
