Ncuti Gatwa, star of Sex Education, discusses his experience working on the show and reveals that it wasn't always a positive one. After much speculation, it has been confirmed that the hit Netflix series will be ending after its fourth season. Despite the show's popularity, fans of Sex Education are understandably disappointed by this news. Interestingly, it seems that the actors involved also did not have an enjoyable time working on the project.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gatwa reflects on his farewell to the character of Eric Effiong as he prepares to make his debut as the 15th Doctor in the beloved series Doctor Who. Read his full statement below:
Why Sex Education Is Ending After Season 4
"It was incredibly challenging; it was an enormous production. When you're narrating tales that have never been witnessed before, there is always an ongoing struggle about the best way to convey them. It wasn't always filled with bliss. I sense that we have surpassed its limits and dedicated our utmost efforts to it."
Netflix's Sex Education has garnered a devoted following, thanks to its sensitive exploration of sexuality and the triumphs and tribulations that come with it during adolescence. Throughout its run, the show has embraced captivating and unique storylines, appealing to a diverse range of viewers. While the main characters are clearly defined, the ensemble cast is also given a chance to shine, providing a rich and multifaceted narrative. Despite the show's excellence, it is disheartening to learn that some of the original actors faced challenges during their tenure on the series.
Creator Laurie Nunn believes that Sex Education season 4 is the ideal time to conclude the series. As the storyline naturally progresses, with Otis Milburn and his friends completing secondary school and transitioning to university, Nunn feels that extending the show beyond its prime is not a viable option. However, she assures viewers that the final season will provide satisfying resolutions, particularly regarding the complicated relationship between Otis and Maeve Wiley.
It is important to acknowledge that the show will undergo significant changes upon its return. Firstly, the familiar setting of Moordale Secondary School will no longer be prominently featured, as the academic institution was forced to close at the end of season 3. Additionally, the upcoming season of Sex Education will feature a smaller cast, as a number of actors have already confirmed their absence from the show.
