Italian media reports have announced the death of Matteo Messina Denaro, a Mafia boss who successfully evaded law enforcement for nearly thirty years before being arrested in January. He passed away while undergoing medical treatment at the San Salvatore hospital in LAquila, central Italy. Denaro, believed to be responsible for numerous Mafia-related killings on behalf of the Cosa Nostra crime group, had been receiving treatment for colon cancer. This news was reported by public broadcaster Rai on Monday.
The former leader of the Sicilian Mafia, who had been on the run since 1993, was apprehended at a private health clinic in Palermo in January. Europol had considered him one of Europe's most wanted criminals, as confirmed by prosecutor Maurizio de Lucia in an interview with CNN. Messina Denaro had been convicted in absentia and received multiple life sentences, particularly for his role in the murders of anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992.
In 2020, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for carrying out fatal bombings in Milan, Florence, and Rome during the late 1990s. Additionally, he was convicted of the horrific murder and torture of the 11-year-old son of an adversary who had testified against the Cosa Nostra.
Prior to his death, legal proceedings were underway to prosecute him for the assassinations of Falcone and Borsellino, as well as for the brutal killing of 11-year-old Giuseppe Di Matteo.
He had been evading the authorities for almost three decades, making him the most elusive fugitive of the Cosa Nostra criminal organization. The arrest took place in January when over 100 officers from the anti-Mafia Carabinieri conducted a raid at the Maddalena clinic.
Security forces dedicated to combating the Mafia were gradually tightening their grip on Messina Denaro's network. They successfully confiscated approximately €3 billion ($3.25 billion) in assets held by individuals believed to be aiding his fugitive existence. In addition, a crackdown during 2009 and 2010 resulted in numerous arrests associated with Denaro's criminal activities.

The capture of Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro has sparked concerns regarding how he managed to remain at large for such a significant period of time. Often referred to as Diabolik, Denaro is considered one of the offspring of Bernardo Provenzano, who gained notoriety for being apprehended while in hiding at a farmhouse near Corleone, Sicily, in April 2006.
Born on April 26, 1962, Messina Denaro grew up with crime deeply intertwined in his family. Hailing from Sicily, he was the offspring of a notorious Mafia boss. During the extensive arrest operation carried out between 2009 and 2010, his brother Salvatore Messina Denaro was among those apprehended. However, Salvatore staunchly refused to disclose any information regarding Messina Denaro's whereabouts. In 2013, his sister Patrizia Messina Denaro received a 14-year prison sentence for her involvement in Mafia activities. Presently, she remains incarcerated, serving out her term.
According to Felia Allum, a professor specializing in comparative organized crime and corruption at the University of Bath in the UK, Messina Denaro is regarded as the ultimate remnant of the former generation of Mafia leaders. Allum further explains that he symbolizes the bridge between the aggressive and openly dominant Cosa Nostra of the 1990s and the more discreet and business-oriented Mafia of the present century.
