During the 2022 Oscars, Chris Rock's joke about Jada Pinkett Smith didn't sit well with the actress or her husband, Will Smith. Rock playfully said, "Jada, I'm a huge fan. Looking forward to G.I. Jane 2!" He then added, "That was a good one."
Pinkett Smith, on the other hand, rolled her eyes on screen before Smith approached the stage and smacked Rock. The incident, which initially seemed planned, led ABC to mute the live segment. Smith, the King Richard actor, returned to his seat and declared, "Do not mention my wife again." Rock tried to dismiss the situation with a laugh and promised not to bring up Pinkett Smith. This remark from the former Saturday Night Live comedian referred to Pinkett Smith's shaved head. She had previously discussed her alopecia diagnosis on her show, Red Table Talk. Alopecia is a medical condition that causes hair loss.
Despite Smith's later apology to Rock, the harm had already been inflicted - leading to Smith's ten-year ban from The Academy and all associated events. In October 2023, Pinkett Smith disclosed that she and Smith had actually been separated for six years during the notorious slap incident, but they are currently in the process of reconciling their relationship.

Will Smith and Chris Rock's 2022 Oscars Incident Over Jada Pinkett Smith: Everything to Know
Chris Rock's jest about Jada Pinkett Smith at the 2022 Oscars failed to resonate with both the actress and her husband, Will Smith.
"Jada, my affection for you knows no bounds. G.I. Jane 2, eagerly anticipating its release. Agreed?" Rock jested at the prestigious event in March, followed by a nonchalant, "That was quite amusing."
On screen, Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes as Smith approached the stage and slapped Rock. The incident, which seemed scripted at first, led ABC to silence the live segment. After returning to his seat, the King Richard actor defended his wife, saying, "Don't mention my wife's name again." Rock tried to brush off the situation with a laugh and vowed not to bring up Pinkett Smith. Rock's joke, referring to Pinkett Smith's shaved head, followed the Red Table Talk host's previous discussion about her alopecia diagnosis, a condition that results in hair loss.
Smith's apology to Rock came after the damage had been done; as a result, he received a 10-year ban from The Academy and its affiliated events. In October 2023, Pinkett Smith disclosed that she and Smith had been separated for six years during the notorious slap incident, but their relationship status remains uncertain as they continue to work things out.

The Exchange
At the 94th Academy Awards, there was a surprising moment when Will Smith unexpectedly approached Rock and struck him while he was delivering his monologue. Unaired footage of the incident emerged on Twitter, with the Bee Movie actor candidly expressing, "Will Smith just brutally hit me."
The Suicide Squad star, on his end, promptly resumed his seat and bellowed, "Refrain from mentioning my spouse's name in such a derogatory manner! Refrain from uttering my spouse's name in such a derogatory manner!"

The Reason
Will's response was triggered by Rock's comment about Jada's potential involvement in G.I. Jane 2. The joke referring to the Girls Trip actress's shaved head prompted her to express her disapproval through eye-rolling, just moments before her husband dramatically entered the stage.

Trying to Make Peace
After the on air incident, Diddy trying to offer support to the feuding pair.
"I had no idea that this year's Oscars would be the most thrilling ever," he started. "Alright, Will and Chris, let's settle that like family at the Gold Party, alright? But for now, let's continue with love. Everyone, let's hear some noise!"

Will's Speech
The Philadelphia triumphed, claiming the prestigious Best Actor award for his remarkable portrayal in the film King Richard. Just moments before, Will tenderly kissed Jada, setting the stage for his poignant speech on the importance of family.
"Oh, wow. Richard Williams was an unwavering guardian of his loved ones," he choked out, tears streaming down his face. "I am being summoned in my own journey to love and safeguard others, to be a lifeline for my people. I understand that in this line of work, enduring criticism is part of the package. Enduring the madness of others speaking ill of you is a necessity. In this industry, disrespect is par for the course. And yet, we must forge ahead with a smile, pretending that it does not faze us."
He exclaimed, "I would like to express my deepest apologies to the academy as well as extend my apologies to all the other nominees. ... I am truly grateful for this incredible moment. Furthermore, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude on behalf of Richard and the entire Williams family. Thank you. I sincerely hope that the academy will extend an invitation for me to return in the future."

Chris' Past With Will and Jada
In 2016, the Grown Ups actor took a dig at Jada boycotting the Academy Awards during his opening monologue.
"Jada's decision to boycott the Oscars angered me. Comparing her boycott to me boycotting Rihanna's panties is absurd because I wasn't even invited. The fact that Will was not nominated despite his exceptional performance is unfair. It's also unjust that he was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West. This year, the Oscars will have some notable changes. The 'in memoriam' package will exclusively feature black individuals who were tragically shot by the police while on their way to the movies. I know it's a bold statement, but it needed to be said." Rock and Jada have previously collaborated in the animated film franchise Madagascar. Additionally, in 1995, Rock made a guest appearance on an episode of Will's show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

As for Smith, he chose to steer clear of the press room after his impressive victory. Nevertheless, he was seen jubilantly celebrating with his well-deserved trophy at the Vanity Fair afterparty, where Diddy assured that the controversy had been resolved.
"That's not a problem. That's over. I can confirm that," the musician told Page Six. "It's all love. They're brothers."

The Apology
Smith expressed his remorse via his Instagram account on Monday, acknowledging the harm that violence can bring to society. He admitted that his behavior during the recent Academy Awards was not acceptable and cannot be justified. Chris Breaks His Silence, Academy Reveals Will's Refusal to Leave Oscars
During his first standup performance since the incident, Chris reflected on the awards show and expressed that he is still trying to reconcile with what had occurred. A witness shared that the comedian began his show on March 30, with a seemingly innocent question, "How was your weekend?" However, there was an underlying implication that his own weekend was not as good. This clever remark generated a significant amount of laughter, effectively easing the tension in the room. Amidst the applause from the audience, Chris became emotional and appreciative, exclaiming, "You all are getting me misty-eyed and stuff." The insider reported that Chris mentioned the show had been prepared before the incident and purposely avoided addressing it directly throughout the performance. Shortly after, it was revealed that Will had been asked to leave the ceremony but had refused. The Academy will convene on April 18 to assess whether the esteemed actor violated any codes of conduct and determine possible consequences, such as suspension or expulsion. In light of the shocking and distressing incident witnessed by both those present and viewers at home during the 94th Oscars, the Academy expressed their profound apologies to Mr. Rock for what he endured on their stage. They commended his resilience in that moment and extended their apologies to the nominees, guests, and viewers, acknowledging that the events should have been a joyous celebration.

The Producer's Perspective
During an interview with Good Morning America, Will Packer, the producer of the 2022 Oscars, shed light on the events that unfolded behind the scenes. Packer disclosed that the police were "ready" to apprehend Smith immediately. Furthermore, he commended Rock for displaying tremendous composure amidst the intense situation.
Packer said that Chris's actions, such as completing the category and handing the trophy to Questlove, who deserved the recognition, allowed them to carry on with the show. He described the event as "bittersweet" because it overshadowed many significant moments and stated that he had no involvement in discussions about removing Smith from the theater prior to his victory.

Will’s Resignation
After the incident, the actor from Men in Black made the decision to step down from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Additionally, he acknowledged that he is willing to accept any repercussions that the Board considers necessary.
In response to the Academy's disciplinary hearing notice, I have promptly taken responsibility and am prepared to fully accept the consequences for my actions. The way I conducted myself during the 94th Academy Awards presentation was indeed shocking, painful, and without excuse. The extent of those I have hurt is vast, encompassing Chris, his family, numerous dear friends and loved ones, as well as all those present and the global audiences watching from home. I understand that I have violated the Academy's trust," expressed Smith in a statement shared with Variety in April 2022. "Furthermore, I have denied fellow nominees and winners the chance to bask in the joy of their exceptional accomplishments. This realization has left me utterly devastated."

New Academy Meeting Date
The Academy Board of Governors announced in April 2022 that they would advance their meeting on Smith's Oscars scandal from April 18 to April 8, following his resignation announcement.
According to a letter written by Academy president David Rubin on April 6, the original April 18 date was chosen in compliance with California law and the Academy's Standards of Conduct. This date allowed for the consideration of potentially suspending or expelling Mr. Smith from membership. The revised timetable ensured that Smith received 15 days' notice, allowing him to submit a written statement to the board at least five days before the meeting.
Rubin clarified that after Smith's resignation from the Academy, suspension or expulsion were no longer options and the legally mandated timeline no longer mattered. Now, he stated, it is in the best interest of everyone involved to resolve this matter promptly.

The Academy's Verdict
On April 8, the Academy announced a ban on Smith's attendance at all Academy events or programs for the next 10 years, including the Academy Awards. This ban applies to both in-person and virtual events.
“The 94th Oscars were meant to honor the remarkable achievements of individuals in our community during the past year. However, the impact of Mr. Smith's unacceptable and harmful behavior on stage overshadowed these moments," stated Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson in a letter following the board's meeting. "We apologize for not adequately addressing the situation during the telecast."
Smith reacted to the news in a statement, telling Page Six, “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision."

Have Chris and Will Talked?
In July 2022, Smith disclosed that he and Rock had not reconciled.
Via Instagram, he stated, "I have attempted to contact Chris, but his response indicated that he is not prepared to have a conversation. He will reach out when he is ready." Smith emphasized his apology once again in the video, describing his behavior as "unacceptable."
"I made an independent decision based on my personal experiences and history with Chris, completely unrelated to any influence from Jada. I apologize, my love," he expressed regretfully. "I also extend my apologies to my children and my entire family for the trouble I have caused them."
He proceeded to specifically address Questlove, whose category was being announced during the incident.
"To all my fellow nominees, I consider us a community. It feels as though I emerged victorious because of your votes. It deeply saddens me to have deprived you of your moment and tarnished it. I can vividly recall the expression in Questlove's eyes," Smith expressed. "You see, this incident took place during Questlove's presentation. And honestly, saying 'sorry' just doesn't seem sufficient."
