In Secret Invasion episode 1, a significant event occurs as Maria Hill dies, bringing heightened tension to the Disney+ MCU show and evoking a sense of nostalgia that has been absent since Avengers Endgame. The episode begins with an anticipated twist, revealing that Everett Ross was actually a Skrull in disguise. However, it is the unexpected conclusion of Secret Invasion episode 1 that truly surprises viewers, as Maria Hill is tragically killed after Nick Fury's team fails to prevent Gravik's bombing attack.
Maria Hill made her first appearance in The Avengers, where Cobie Smulders portrayed her as Nick Fury's "right-hand woman." She continued to play a significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home (in a slightly different capacity). Smulders also reprised her role as Maria Hill in three episodes of Agents of SHIELD, although the question of whether the show is considered part of the MCU remains a topic of debate. Considering Hill's longstanding partnership with Fury since her introduction in the MCU, it seemed reasonable to expect her to have a prominent role in Secret Invasion. As a result, her unexpected demise came as a shock to many.
Why Secret Invasion Just Killed Maria Hill
Maria Hill's demise in the very first episode of Secret Invasion season 1 immediately heightens the stakes for the series, demonstrating that no one is exempt from danger. With the absence of the Avengers in Secret Invasion, the show must find alternative methods to portray the Skrulls' invasion as a grave event with significant consequences for the MCU. Naturally, the revelation that a Marvel character has been masquerading as a Skrull is a narrative device that Secret Invasion is likely to employ multiple times. Nevertheless, there is a limit to the number of "this character was a Skrull all along" twists that can be utilized before it becomes tiresome and predictable.
Killing off Maria Hill establishes the tone for Secret Invasion without the need for an early revelation of a major Skrull character in episode 1. With the exception of Everett Ross, no other significant character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe was unveiled as a Skrull in the first episode of Secret Invasion. However, the death of Maria Hill serves as a prime example of why no character can be trusted in this storyline. Maria Hill was fatally shot by Gravik, who had disguised himself as Nick Fury. Both Hill and many viewers believed that Fury was offering assistance to her, but in reality, it was Gravik utilizing his Skrull shapeshifting abilities to pose as Fury and carry out the act of killing Hill.
Maria Hill's Death Is The Delivery The MCU Has Been Missing
Marvel Comics’ Secret Invasion was a significant milestone in the Marvel Universe due to its extensive roster of characters. While the upcoming MCU adaptation may not directly mirror the comic, it has been positioned as a momentous occasion with far-reaching implications for Phase 5. However, for a new Marvel film or series to truly resonate as a major event, it must introduce lasting repercussions. Since Avengers: Endgame, where we witnessed the heartbreaking deaths of Iron Man and Black Widow, the MCU has been lacking a character demise that raises the stakes for the overarching narrative of the franchise.
Loki, WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania all played significant roles in the overarching Multiverse Saga narrative. However, unlike these projects, none of them saw the demise of a character that audiences had been invested in since Phases 1 or 2, as Avengers: Endgame did. While Scarlet Witch's act of killing the members of Earth-838's Illuminati was surprising within the context of the film, it didn't contribute much to the larger MCU storyline. Similarly, Wanda's supposed "death" in Doctor Strange 2 holds little to no real impact, considering the high likelihood of her return in the Multiverse Saga. The exception to this pattern is the death of Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
In contrast to recent deaths in the MCU, the passing of Maria Hill felt definitive. The show of her body after being shot in Secret Invasion suggests that her death is not a fakeout. There were no sudden changes in her appearance, indicating that she wasn't a Skrull in disguise. Furthermore, considering Fury's previous fake death in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it is unlikely that Marvel would employ a similar trick with Hill. These factors lend more weight to Maria Hill's death, evoking the same sense of loss last felt with the deaths of Tony and Natasha in Avengers: Endgame.
Maria Hill's Death Is Good For Secret Invasion, But Bad For Her
Maria Hill’s demise in the first episode of Secret Invasion has sparked a polarizing response among audiences. Some are questioning the decision to kill off a character who has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since The Avengers. While it is true that Hill has been present in the MCU since Phase 1, she has never been given substantial focus in any of her appearances. Much like how Secret Invasion delves into a unique exploration of Nick Fury, the show had the opportunity to provide Hill with a compelling character arc that she had been lacking.
However, Hill's death serves the overall narrative of Secret Invasion. Eliminating a Phase 1 MCU character who has experienced significant events such as the Battle of New York, the fall of SHIELD, and the Battle of Sokovia right from the start of the series is a bold creative choice. It immediately establishes that anything is possible in Secret Invasion, and that beloved characters could be in jeopardy. Additionally, Hill's demise serves as proof that the Skrull insurrection led by Gravik is a genuine threat and that they will go to great lengths to achieve their objectives.
The reliance on Skrull twists to establish the tone of Secret Invasion would have been predictable. To truly captivate audiences familiar with Marvel Comics and the MCU's Skrulls, Marvel's Secret Invasion needed something more. The shocking moment when Gravik masquerades as Nick Fury and kills Hill proves to be more impactful than the initial reveal of Everett Ross being a Skrull. This narrative choice demonstrates that Hill's death was a successful storytelling move.
It is worth mentioning that Maria Hill's demise raises expectations for the remaining episodes of Secret Invasion. It remains uncertain whether the show will introduce an even more surprising twist than Hill's death. However, her passing must have a significant impact on Nick Fury's decisions and overall storyline. Hill has been Fury's partner since before the Battle of New York, and they have experienced all the major events of the MCU together. Secret Invasion's marketing has promised a different version of Nick Fury, and Hill's death may hold the key to this transformation. In the midst of numerous multiverse cameos and potential resurrections through time travel, Hill's death could bring a refreshing change to the MCU.
