Recent reports indicate that Marvel may be considering bringing back Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) for another installment of the Avengers film series. In response to these reports, Johansson has clarified that Black Widow's character has met her demise and is unlikely to make a return.
When asked about the possibility of her return, Johansson compared it to a zombie film, emphasizing that Black Widow's death in Avengers: Endgame marked the end of her character. She expressed that it would take a miraculous event for her to come back, stating, "It would be a wonder. It would truly be a remarkable event in the Marvel universe."
Johansson, however, is leaving the possibility of her return to the Marvel universe open. "But, who knows?" she said.
According to Variety's report that announced Downey Jr. and Johansson's potential return, Marvel has not confirmed their comeback yet. In April, Johansson stated that she was finished with Marvel and also expressed her opinion on the imbalance of gender representation in the original Avengers film, referring to it as a "sausage party" due to the disproportionate number of male characters.
Responding to the report, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige expressed his surprise, stating, "I haven't even seen that; is it a recent rumor?"
The most recent addition to the Marvel cinematic universe is The Marvels, which made its debut on November 10 and had the least impressive box office opening in Marvel's history. Marvel has scheduled only one movie for release in 2024—Deadpool 3.
While Johansson might not be coming back as Black Widow anytime soon, she is producing a new Marvel project with Feige. However, this has yet to be officially announced.

As an enthusiastic fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I have mixed feelings about the possibility of Scarlett Johansson's return as Black Widow in future Avengers films. On the one hand, I understand that her character had a definitive and emotional ending in "Avengers: Endgame," and bringing her back would undermine the impact of her sacrifice. On the other hand, Black Widow is one of the most popular and beloved characters in the MCU, and I would be thrilled to see her return in some capacity.
I think the key to a successful return for Black Widow would be to find a way to do it that respects her character arc and doesn't cheapen her sacrifice. One possibility would be to bring her back in a prequel or flashback sequence, exploring her backstory and showing how she became the hero we know and love. Another option would be to have her return as a mentor or guide to a new generation of heroes, passing on her knowledge and experience to the next generation.
