The Other Two, a Max comedy that premiered in 2019, has been canceled just before its season finale, which now serves as its series finale. The show revolves around Brooke and Cary Dubek, fame-obsessed siblings, whose lives take a turn when their younger brother Chase becomes an overnight sensation as a pop star. Season 3 of the series, featuring Molly Shannon, Ken Marino, and Josh Segarra alongside Heléne Yorke and Drew Tarver, debuted on May 4.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Max made the announcement of the show's cancellation the day before the season 3 finale aired. Alongside this news, unrelated allegations have emerged about the creators and showrunners, Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider. Both Kelly and Schneider, who were Emmy nominees for their writing on previous Saturday Night Live seasons, were subject to an official investigation regarding claims of a toxic work environment. Although they were ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing, Kelly faced allegations of verbal abuse and overworking the crew, while Schneider was accused of enabling this behavior.
The Other Two Probably Ended at the Right Time
From a creative perspective, it was likely appropriate for The Other Two to conclude with season 3, considering the potential concerns regarding the workplace environment. The show revolved around two characters who continuously faced obstacles in their pursuit of the recognition they believed they deserved. Nevertheless, Cary's rising status as an actor in the new season would have posed challenges to this recurring theme in future seasons.
With its cancellation, The Other Two can solidify its reputation as a beloved cult classic. Many series, such as Arrested Development, Party Down, and Pushing Daisies, have attained iconic status in television history, being regarded as "canceled too soon" only after their runs concluded. It is worth noting that both Arrested Development and Party Down received reboot seasons years after their original airings.
However, both reboots have demonstrated that The Other Two may find its most fulfilling narrative conclusion by concluding at this point. Although the new season of Party Down received positive reception overall, its viewership was uncertain and there have been no announcements regarding another season. In contrast, Arrested Development seasons 4 and 5 were controversial among viewers and tarnished the reputation of a show that was previously regarded as a gem during its first three seasons.
