Savannah Guthrie's son Charley unexpectedly appeared on Today on Thursday, May 23.

During the U.S. Navy Band's performance to honor Fleet Week, Guthrie's 7-year-old son FaceTimed his mother. Hoda Kotb, the cohost, shared Charley's face on the phone screen while the band played.

"The plaza outside, the three of us, and one little boy are all enjoying this music," Kotb said, showing Charley on FaceTime. "He wanted to hear a little bit of it. Say hi, Charley! Char is having breakfast!"

Kotb mentioned that the little one also "wanted to hear a little bit too and you can't blame him. The music is incredible."

“It’s wonderful but I was telling him, ‘Shh, We’re on the air!’” Guthrie, 52, quipped.

Guthrie shares daughter Vale, 9, with husband Michael Feldman, along with Charley. They recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. Guthrie attributes her ability to handle unexpected moments, like an on-air FaceTime call, to having children later in life.

In a March 2022 interview with Good Housekeeping, Guthrie expressed gratitude for the perspective that comes with age. She believes that her children benefit from seeing her navigate life with a sense of peace and calm, rather than the stressed and anxious person she may have been in her 30s.

She mentioned that in New York City, there are many parents who are older, so she and her husband don't feel out of place.

She also shared that sometimes she wonders if younger parents feel the same way she does on a tired Saturday afternoon. She realized that they do, as she has friends who are younger parents and they too feel exhausted at times. Parenthood comes with moments of low energy and frustration, no matter the age.

Earlier this month, in celebration of Mother’s Day, the journalist took to Instagram to share a heartwarming slideshow honoring her mom and children. The post featured special moments between Guthrie, her kids, and their grandmother. In one set of photos, Guthrie posed with Charley and Vale against a city backdrop. In another, she squeezed between them for a beachside snapshot. She captioned the post with “Forever ❤️.”
