Nominations for the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced on Wednesday, January 10.
Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani revealed the nominees on Instagram Live through the SAG Awards and Netflix accounts, following an introduction from Fran Drescher, the SAG-AFTRA president.
The SAG Awards are scheduled for February 24. Leading up to the 2024 nominations, Barbie and Oppenheimer were expected to receive multiple nods after both films debuted on the same day in July 2023, creating the pop culture phenomenon known as Barbenheimer. Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy, the lead actors in the respective movies, joined forces in December 2023 to discuss their widespread popularity.
Murphy, 47, explained to Robbie, 33, during Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, "I believe it happened because both movies were exceptional. That summer, the cinema featured a wide variety of content and I think it resonated in a way that no one could have anticipated."
“You can’t manufacture that or plan for it,” Robbie added, to which Murphy agreed, "No, and it may never happen again."
When discussing their preparation for their roles, Murphy quipped about walking around his basement and talking to himself. In a more earnest moment, he also revealed that he studied the titular character's movements and replicated them, noting the specific way the character stood with his hand on his hip and a slight, jaunty angle.
Robbie found it strange to prepare for the role of Barbie because her usual methods of preparation didn't work. She explained, "I work with an acting coach, dialect coach, movement coach, read extensively, and watch various content. I also heavily rely on animal work. But after 45 minutes of pretending to be a flamingo, I realized it wasn't effective."
Robbie sought help from director Greta Gerwig with her character concerns, expressing her fear of portraying the character as dumbed down and clueless. Greta found inspiration from an episode of 'This American Life' about a woman who lacks self-awareness and an internal voice, despite being highly intelligent.
