Ryan Reynolds has made it clear that his oldest daughter, James, will not be allowed to cross the SAG-AFTRA picket line. This decision comes after the union announced costume guidelines for Halloween during the ongoing strike. Reynolds shared his humorous take on the situation, saying, "I can't wait to playfully call my 8-year-old a 'scab' all night. While she may not be part of the union, it's important for her to understand."
His response came after the release of SAG-AFTRA guidelines on Wednesday, October 18. These guidelines aim to clarify how actors on strike can still dress up as their favorite film characters on Halloween without violating picket line rules.
The notice, which was shared through the official SAG-AFTRA strike website, stated, "On Halloween, we want to ensure that our members do not unintentionally violate strike regulations. Therefore, we have compiled a list of dos and don'ts for costumes. Take a look and have a fantastic Halloween filled with spooky fun!"
Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagicActors who are on strike have been advised to opt for costumes that draw inspiration from generic characters and iconic figures. Some suggested options include appearing as a ghost, zombie, or spider.
One useful suggestion advises stars to "portray characters from non-struck content, such as an animated TV show, as part of their attire." However, it is advised that they avoid "sharing pictures of costumes modeled after struck content on social media."
The organization strongly urged the actors involved in strikes to "send a strong and unequivocal message to our striking employees that we will not endorse their content until a fair contract is in place."
The Halloween-themed memo was issued shortly after SAG-AFTRA presented a proposal to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on how actors could benefit from streaming service content. On October 11, the AMPTP and four major studio CEOs - David Zaslav of Warner Bros. Discovery, Ted Sarandos of Netflix, Donna Langley of NBCUniversal, and Bob Iger of Disney - walked out of the negotiations.
The next day, SAG-AFTRA released a statement stating that their proposals were "rejected" by the AMPTP and that there was a refusal to make a counteroffer.
The SAG-AFTRA strike, which commenced in July, has primarily revolved around the issue of additional compensation for actors. In July, the SAG-AFTRA union joined the Writers Guild of America (WGA), who had been on strike since May. The WGA strike was resolved on September 27.
On Tuesday, October 17, actors such as George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Ben Affleck, and Tyler Perry met with SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher to discuss the shortcomings of the previous contract negotiation meeting. No further contract negotiation meetings regarding the strike have been scheduled yet.
