Russian forces unexpectedly attacked northern Ukraine, making minor advancements, as reported by a Ukrainian military source. This marks the most significant cross-border ground offensive in almost two years.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the assault on the border town of Vovchansk, close to Kharkiv, is part of Russia's "new wave of counteroffensive actions." He mentioned that a intense battle is currently ongoing in the region.
Ukraine's Defense Ministry announced that reserve units were sent to the northern Kharkiv region following intense Russian shelling in Vovchansk on Thursday night. The statement revealed that Russian reconnaissance groups, supported by armored vehicles, initiated a cross-border advance at around 5:00am.
A Ukrainian military source informed CNN that the enemy managed to penetrate the border 1 km (0.62 miles) deep. Their objective was to advance 10 km deep to establish a buffer zone at the border, protecting Russian territory from the impact of the war.
The conflict has been concentrated in the southern and eastern fronts ever since the Ukrainian military successfully reclaimed territory seized by Russian forces at the start of the conflict. The northern Kharkiv region was liberated in the late summer of 2022.
Asked about developments, Zelensky did not downplay their seriousness but said Ukraine’s military had been expecting such a move.

Russia has initiated a new round of counteroffensive moves in the northern Kharkiv region. In response, Ukraine has deployed troops, brigades, and artillery to confront them, as mentioned on Friday.
The Ukrainian military and command were prepared for this and expected the enemy's actions. Currently, a intense battle is taking place in the area. It seems that the enemy has been halted by our artillery fire.
Oleh Syniehubov, the head of Kharkiv’s regional military administration, reported on Telegram that Russian forces launched attacks using aerial bombs, Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, and artillery all night. Despite this, he reassured the residents that Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine and located just 30 kilometers from the Russian border, was not at a higher risk following Russia's actions.
Syniehubov emphasized that the enemy forces are not a direct threat to Kharkiv city. He stated that their capabilities are limited to carrying out provocations in the northern direction.
Syniehubov reported that one man lost his life and at least three individuals were wounded in Vovchansk and the nearby village of Charkaski Tyshky.
Authorities instructed residents of border villages to evacuate for their safety. National police shared images and a video on social media, depicting officers assisting residents in packing their belongings into police vehicles before transporting them to secure locations.
The cross-border assault comes after several months of increased Russian air attacks on the city of Kharkiv, which have knocked out all of its power-generating capacity, as well as its sub-stations.
