Is it true that Rob Zombie is exploiting the public domain trend with his horror movie "Steam Boat" centered around Steamboat Willie's Mickey Mouse? Rumors abound.
Every year, Public Domain Day marks the release of countless art pieces -- films, shows, and books -- from the limitations of copyright as their century-long restrictions come to an end. In 2022, a prime illustration of this was A.A. Milne's original Winnie the Pooh, resulting in the macabre reimagining in "Blood and Honey."
Mickey Mouse is undoubtedly the most notable offering of 2024 – particularly the Steamboat Willie iteration of Disney's iconic character from the 1928 short film.
At the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day, a slew of unusual projects centered on a dark interpretation of the beloved rodent were revealed, including two horror films and a terrifying video game. But does Rob Zombie's film fall into this category?
Is the Rob Zombie’s “Steam Boat” Mickey Mouse horror movie real?
No, Rob Zombie isn’t directing a Steamboat Willie horror movie.
Other eccentric versions of Mickey are likely to emerge in the coming months, but The Devil’s Rejects filmmaker is not involved in any projects related to Disney’s iconic character. This information has been circulating from YODA BBY ABY, a Facebook page known for sharing false movie news and posters, such as the rumored John Krasinski’s Die Hard remake and the nonexistent NeverEnding Story sequel.

Editor's P/S
As a hard fan of Rob Zombie's horror movies, I was thrilled to hear the rumors about his upcoming film "Steam Boat," which was said to be a spooky horror flick based on Mickey Mouse's Steamboat Willie. The idea of Rob Zombie putting his unique spin on such an iconic character was both exciting and terrifying, and I couldn't wait to see what he would come up with. However, my excitement was short-lived when I learned that the rumors were false and that Rob Zombie was not, in fact, directing a Steamboat Willie horror movie.
The news was disappointing, but I understand that Rob Zombie has his own creative vision and may not have been interested in taking on a project based on an existing character. Nevertheless, I can't help but feel a sense of missed opportunity, as I believe Rob Zombie's unique style and approach to horror would have made for a truly unforgettable Steamboat Willie horror movie.
