Rivian Adventure Charging: No More Free Rides

Rivian's Adventure Charging Network will no longer be free as users will now be charged for their charging services, marking a significant change in the company's approach

If you own a Rivian R1T or R1S, chances are you have utilized one of the complimentary "Rivian Adventure Network" fast charging stations within the past year. Initially, as the company expanded its charging infrastructure, early adopters were fortunate enough to enjoy free charging, enhancing their experience with their new electric vehicle. Unfortunately, this complimentary service is coming to an end, and Rivian will commence charging customers for each charging session.

For those who may not be aware, the Adventure Network refers to Rivian's assortment of DC fast-charging stations designed for owners embarking on long journeys. While these charging stations are limited in numbers and locations, with just under 200 chargers spread across approximately 30 sites, owners delighted in encountering them during road trips or while planning their travels. Though not unlimited like Tesla's initial offering (which was eventually discontinued), the free charging provided by Rivian was considered a valuable perk for early owners.

Starting this month, Rivian forum owners have confirmed that the company is sending out emails to inform users about the upcoming end of free charging services. From "early November" onwards, users will begin to receive charges for using any Adventure Network charger. However, the process remains convenient as you can still easily plug in, charge, and go. The difference now is that your Rivian account will be billed for the electricity consumed. Rivian advises users to ensure their billing information is accurate for a hassle-free experience.

While everyone enjoys receiving complimentary services, Rivian understands the need to generate revenue. This is particularly crucial if the company aims to achieve its target of installing approximately 3,500 fast charging stations across more than 600 locations in the United States by the end of 2025. Currently, only Rivian vehicles can access these chargers, but as expansion plans progress, Rivian intends to allow non-Rivian electric vehicles to utilize these charging facilities. Their objective is to gradually support electric vehicles on popular highways, road stops, and routes.

Next time you come across a Rivian Adventure Network charger (if one happens to be nearby), feel free to give it a try and anticipate being billed for it. As per the email sent to owners, the pricing for each station will be displayed on the screen or can be checked through the Rivian app prior to plugging in.

As an enthusiastic Rivian owner, I am disappointed by the company's decision to start charging for Adventure Charging. While I understand the need for Rivian to generate revenue, I believe that the company should have honored its commitment to provide free charging for the lifetime of the vehicle. This change will make it more expensive for Rivian owners to take long road trips, and it will also make it more difficult for potential customers to justify the cost of a Rivian vehicle.

Rivian's decision to start charging for Adventure Charging is also a missed opportunity to promote the adoption of electric vehicles. By making it more expensive to charge an electric vehicle, Rivian is making it less attractive for people to switch from gas-powered vehicles. This is a step in the wrong direction, and I urge Rivian to reconsider its decision.
