In Frontier Development's F1 Manager 2023, players take on the role of a Team Principal and are tasked with overseeing various aspects of a Formula 1 team. This includes managing car development, devising race strategies, and handling staff and drivers. One crucial factor in maintaining the team's success is to consistently identify and nurture a talented pool of young drivers who can potentially replace current drivers when needed.
To acquire these drivers, players must ensure that their Scouts are actively assessing available drivers across all categories. Having knowledge of the driver's current contract will give players an idea of the financial commitment required to sign them. Once signed, players must focus on developing the driver's skills to ensure they reach the necessary level of performance.
Scouting & Development
To assess the skills of an available driver, a scout must be assigned. The scouting process can take up to 30 days or longer, depending on the level of detail desired by the players regarding a specific candidate. This will provide a summary of the driver's abilities and statistics, which can then be compared to current or reserve drivers, as well as recently evaluated candidates, by selecting the Compare Drivers button.
If a driver is in a reserve role for the team, it is worthwhile to invest in upgrading their Simulator and providing them with ample opportunities to participate in practice sessions during each race weekend. This will ensure that their skills develop rapidly and that they meet the required performance standards once they take on one of the main seats. Additionally, there may be opportunities to support the development of young drivers all the way down to Formula 3 by sponsoring them. Players can seize these opportunities whenever they receive an email proposition requesting development sponsorship funds.
Negotiation & Contracts
When viewing a driver's profile, their willingness to negotiate a contract will be visible. Drivers who have recently secured long-term contracts at top teams will be less inclined to negotiate compared to those in less stable seats or up-and-coming drivers from lower divisions. It is also worth considering the reserve drivers for other teams, as many of the game's top young drivers can be found there.
Players will need to offer a proposed role and salary to the potential signing. Once again, drivers who are less willing to negotiate or might view the move as a step down from their current team will require persuasion through higher salaries and more bonuses. Players can also choose the start date for the contract, making it easier to plan seasons ahead with an already established driver lineup. The same process applies for hiring Technical Chiefs and other key members of staff. Once a driver is hired, they will assume their designated role at the specified time on their contract, which is typically at the beginning or end of a season, or during the mid-season break.
F1 Manager 2023 is out now and available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
