The original Gears of War on Xbox 360 has attracted a significant number of players with its improved servers. The multiplayer servers and lobbies for Epic Games' Gears of War trilogy on Xbox 360 have been inactive for some time due to the emergence of newer Coalition titles such as Gears of War 4 and the latest installment, Gears 5, which have propelled the Gears multiplayer community forward.

Xbox's popular third-person cover shooter franchise is joining the trend set by Call of Duty, with older games experiencing a resurgence in player counts. Titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops, Black Ops 2, and Modern Warfare 2 have seen a significant increase in player activity, thanks to efforts by Activision and Xbox to revive the Xbox 360 multiplayer era. These beloved Call of Duty games have even surpassed newer releases like Diablo 4, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022), and Hogwarts Legacy on Xbox's sales charts, showcasing the success of the updated matchmaking system.

Now, Xbox is spreading the love to its own first-party blockbuster, Gears of War. After more than a decade, fans of the original Gears of War's multiplayer mode can once again enjoy thriving lobbies filled with players reliving the glory days of the 2006 hit. There are also reports of improved matchmaking for Gears of War 2 and 3, the sequels developed by Epic Games.

With the last mainline Xbox 360-era Gears title, Gears 3 has maintained a slightly higher level of activity over the years compared to its predecessors. Now that the multiplayer for all three classic Gears games is up and running again, it'll be interesting to see if the Gears trilogy, like Call of Duty, will climb to the top of Xbox's sales chart. However, since all the Gears titles are readily available on Xbox Game Pass, many players may be discouraged from purchasing the games outright. Additionally, the Call of Duty franchise has enjoyed decades of continuous mainstream popularity and success, suggesting that this Gears multiplayer renaissance may not reach the sales heights of Call of Duty's.

Xbox might be testing the waters for a Gears collection, similar to Xbox's successful Halo: The Master Chief Collection. While the first Gears game received a remaster in 2015 called Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, fans have been eagerly awaiting remastered versions of Gears 2 and Gears of War 3. A collection of the classic Gears trilogy for modern Xbox consoles would be highly anticipated, especially with the upcoming release of the next Gears title from The Coalition. Gears of War is currently playable on Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
