The release of Genopanic, the highly anticipated sequel to Space Expedition by Mobirate Studio, has been postponed in order to ensure an optimal gaming experience upon launch. Instead of the original release date of October 23, players will now have to wait a little longer to dive into the intergalactic adventure of exploring research station SIMBIRSK and collecting mutant lab experiments. The previous game, Space Expedition, which was released a decade ago, captivated players with its captivating art and mechanics as a 2D platformer, although some expressed concerns about its length. In a recent interview, producer Anton Surkov hinted at a connection between the two games and the possibility of players reuniting with the solitary astronaut.
Two Games, One Universe
Surkov described Space Expedition as a "pen test" and mentioned that it typically takes about 45 minutes to complete, although it can be finished in 30 minutes without much difficulty. Players have praised the game for its Metroidvania elements and the sense of isolation it evokes. However, some players have expressed mixed feelings, considering it more of a prologue than a fully developed game. This is where Genopanic comes into play. While still drawing inspiration from Metroidvania, Surkov revealed that Genopanic incorporates ideas that were not included in Space Expedition. He also mentioned that players can discover Easter eggs in both games. Although the two stories are independent, they complement each other and provide a more comprehensive understanding of the game's world.
Both worlds coexist within the same universe, where a series of peculiar events unfold. Our intention is to intertwine both narratives, sparking additional curiosity among players and ultimately resolving their inquiries in the subsequent installment. This is our overarching plan.
New Companions
In Genopanic, players will not experience loneliness as they will have the company of LAIK, a friendly AI pup. LAIK acts as a helpful guide, providing hints along the journey. However, there is also VOLGA, the Volumetric General Assistant, who serves as the Chief Supervisor of the station. VOLGA is known for being a strict boss, overseeing every aspect of the astronaut's exploration. This is a departure from Space Expedition, where players solely interacted with objects and battled monsters to progress.
LAIK will assist and guide the player, immersing them in the emotions of their surroundings. Meanwhile, for VOLGA, the protagonist is a wild and unpredictable entity within the station. Gaining their trust will require diligent effort, and perhaps even the ability to soften their robotic heart.
In Genopanic, players will be transported back to the nostalgic world of pixel-art platformer games. The subtle sounds of drifting objects in space, distant water leaks, menacing growls, and echoing footsteps will serve as a constant reminder of the distant and otherworldly atmosphere. Dedicated fans of Metroidvania classics may find a worthy addition to their collection if Genopanic lives up to the standards set by Space Expedition within the subgenre.
Genopanic is expected to release sometime in Q4 2023.
