ChargePoint is upgrading its electric vehicle charging stations by incorporating Tesla's NACS connector. Additionally, customers who utilize a ChargePoint Home Flex system in their garage will have the option to acquire NACS conversion kits. These enhancements will be advantageous for Tesla owners and will also position ChargePoint for the widespread implementation of NACS within the industry.
Commencing from 2025, the majority of electric vehicles sold in the United States and Canada will come equipped with an NACS connector. As a result, charging stations must incorporate NACS while concurrently offering CCS connectors for older vehicles. ChargePoint has already commenced the deployment of NACS AC connectors and intends to introduce NACS DC charging in November. It is important to note that these newly added connectors will not replace the existing CCS plugs at ChargePoint stations.
The North American Charging Standard (NACS), a long-standing feature of Tesla vehicles in North America, has surpassed the CCS in terms of hardware availability due to Tesla's market dominance. As Tesla now provides NACS to other automakers for free, the de-facto charging standard is set to simplify EV ownership and facilitate government-funded investments in EV infrastructure, which is currently lacking in many U.S. and Canadian cities. Interestingly, Tesla has also announced plans to support CCS at its Supercharger stations, which may not directly benefit Tesla but will make things more convenient for other EV owners.
It is worth noting that Tesla owners previously had the option to use ChargePoint stations with the help of an adapter, but the support for DC fast charging was limited. With 35 million charging sessions conducted by Tesla owners on ChargePoint, there was already a clear demand for the NACS at their stations, disregarding the broader industry adoption. Furthermore, ChargePoint has now become the first company to offer Tesla owners a viable alternative to Supercharger fast charging.
ChargePoint stations will be equipped with NACS connectors in the following months for residents. Customers who currently own a ChargePoint Home Flex system in their garage can now buy an NACS conversion kit. Despite its cost, the conversion kit is still a more affordable alternative to purchasing an entirely new in-home charging system.
