A new mod for Mass Effect has been released that allows players to see the faces of the Quarians, as well as giving them a fresh appearance. The Quarians, a technologically advanced alien race in the Mass Effect series created by BioWare, have become well-known for their nomadic lifestyle after being forced off their homeworld due to war with the synthetic Geth. They now reside in a fleet of spacecraft constructed from salvaged technology from across the Milky Way. Because of the conditions they live in, the Quarians are required to wear protective suits when outside of their fleet.
Players were introduced to the Quarians through Tali'Zorah nar Rayya, a young traveler that Commander Shepard encounters on the Citadel in the first Mass Effect game. Tali quickly becomes a valuable member of Shepard's crew and a beloved companion because of her technological expertise and endearing, shy personality. Players even have the option to form a romantic relationship with her starting from Mass Effect 2. Although Tali's true face is hidden behind her mask for most of the series, players have the opportunity to unlock a picture of her without her suit on by completing her romance subplot in Mass Effect 3.
Now, a mod created by Mithran56 and naNuke, two passionate Mass Effect fans, allows players to glimpse Tali's face and the faces of other Quarians that Shepard encounters in their epic battle against the Reapers. This mod, called "Children of Rannoch," replaces the Quarians' previously opaque visors with transparent ones, revealing their uniquely textured, alien faces adorned with distinct facial markings and luminous silver eyes. At this time, "Children of Rannoch" is exclusively available for the Legendary Edition of the original Mass Effect game, but the talented creators have plans to extend its availability to the other two installments in the main series.
Tali's unmasked appearance in Mass Effect 3 caused controversy due to BioWare using a stock photograph of a supermodel with minor digital enhancements. The updated Mass Effect: Legendary Edition collection in 2021 addressed this issue, but some fans still felt that the new face looked too human for the enigmatic and fantastical Quarian alien race.
To cater to disappointed players, the new Children of Rannoch mod presents a different interpretation of the Quarians specifically for the original Mass Effect game. Implementing the mod will be more challenging in the subsequent two games of the series, which delve deeper into the Quarians' struggles and feature a larger number of Quarian characters. Nevertheless, having the ability to see the faces of Tali and her fellow Quarians adds a captivating twist to Shepard's interactions with them in the original Mass Effect.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
