Google Assistant is now integrated with the Bard AI, providing enhanced capabilities for composing text messages, creating travel itineraries, answering complex questions, and other tasks. This integration will be available on smartphones, allowing Assistant to summarize web pages, generate image captions on social media, and optimize work in Gmail or Docs. These advancements were unveiled at the Made by Google 2023 event, alongside the introduction of the Pixel 8 smartphone and Pixel Watch 2 wearable.
This announcement holds significance for several reasons. Notably, Google is the first company to include a free AI chatbot in a mobile operating system, granting access to the Bard AI without the need for app downloads, even for users who may have no interest in it. Additionally, this update marks the most significant enhancement to Google Assistant to date.
However, it remains uncertain how helpful this update will be for the average user. The introduction of AI capabilities allows Google Assistant to tackle complex queries, much to the delight of its users. Furthermore, fans of the Bard AI can now conveniently access it through voice commands, eliminating the need for any cumbersome workarounds. Another significant improvement is the integration of AI, enabling Assistant to search for elusive emails in your inbox. However, many of the other functionalities showcased by Google, such as list creation and generating captions for Instagram posts, were already available or required minimal effort to begin with. While the Bard AI's ability to summarize web pages seems promising, AI-generated summaries can still be unreliable, causing users to hesitate if they encounter any major errors.
The AI upgrade coincides with a comprehensive overhaul of Google Assistant. Earlier this year, Google unveiled a new voice for the Assistant, along with improved comprehension of natural language. Additionally, the Pixel 8 launch event highlighted enhancements including two-fold faster Assistant voice processing, automatic language detection, and more precise Call Screen behavior on Pixel devices.
The enhanced Assistant features will first be introduced on the new Pixel 8 smartphone, giving early testers priority access. Eventually, the improved Google Assistant will be widely available on all Assistant-enabled smart speakers, Android devices, and iOS devices.
