With personal devices sporting high resolution 4K screens in our back pockets, it's no wonder that the seatback screens on airplanes can sometimes feel underwhelming.

Even if you've splurged on the most expensive seats on the plane, the screen in front of you is probably not as good as your iPhone screen.

That's where Collins Aerospace and Panasonic Avionics come in. These two big players in the aviation industry have teamed up to create a new way to watch TV and movies on airplanes, called MAYA.

MAYA is a business class seat designed for comfort and efficiency. It features an Astrova Curve 45-inch ultra-wide, ultra-high-definition OLED display.

The screen could offer passengers a cinema-standard viewing experience in the air.

The screen on the plane connects to passengers' own devices, providing a great audio system without the need for headphones. According to Andrew Masson from Panasonic Avionics, this creates the "most immersive experience for the passenger."

At the recent Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg, Germany, Collins and Panasonic's idea stood out as one of the most talked-about innovations at the annual aviation show.

Masson mentioned that the idea was highly appreciated by experts in the industry at AIX.

He mentioned to CNN Travel, "Many viewed it as a significant advancement in luxury travel, meeting their demands for enhancing the passenger experience."

MAYA’s curved screen is three times larger than traditional business class seats. In addition, Panasonic plans to include an Ultra-Widescreen CinemaScope (21:9) display, a format often seen in cinemas.

The screen is considered the focal point of MAYA’s design by Masson. However, it is not just for watching movies. Passengers can also use it to order meals, access maps, and connect to their personal devices.

Some people may not like how the screen takes up a lot of space in the suite, not everyone wants to watch movies during their flight, and it can be overwhelming.

However, for those who enjoy saving their favorite movies to watch while flying at 30,000 feet, MAYA will definitely be attractive.

Masson believes that the super high tech display has the potential to remain relevant in today's fast-changing technology-driven world. He mentions that the screen is "upgradable over time" and built upon "a sustainable technology path."

He confidently states, "With such an integral role within the suite, we do not see any risk of obsolescence."

For now, MAYA is still in the concept stage, with details like specifications, production processes, and timelines yet to be finalized.

However, Masson and his team believe in the future potential of this concept.

“We showcased MAYA to many airlines at AIX, and their feedback was overwhelmingly positive,” he says.
