Content: Kudzu's Kickstarter campaign for a Game Boy release has been highly successful, meeting its goal and even exceeding it with a physical copy on the Nintendo Switch. With 866 backers raising over $46,000, the campaign has garnered substantial support.
In a recent interview with Game Rant, Kudzu's lead developer, Chris Totten, highlighted that their aim for the Game Boy title is not to solely recreate the nostalgic experiences of old-school gamers' childhoods. Rather, the goal is to revitalize and modernize the essence of this genre, offering a fresh perspective on how it can look, feel, and be played in today's era.
Game Boy-Inspired Characters In 2023
The 1990s arguably had one of the strongest line-ups of video game heroes. Characters like Mario, Link, Spyro, and others quickly became iconic figures in their respective franchises and brands. According to Totten, Max, the protagonist of Kudzu, embodies the traditional action-adventure hero archetype. Similar to Link, Max is largely a silent protagonist, although this approach is not as relevant today as it was back then. Drawing inspiration from other Game Boy characters, Max is also lightly based on Totten's brother-in-law, whose personal experiences with nature contributed to the ideas behind Kudzu. Players are able to witness Max's personality through his actions, such as his fondness for placing pinwheels in his garden, a trait borrowed from Totten's brother-in-law.
Zoen, the skilled gardener who has gone missing amidst the invasive kudzu plants, can be compared to a wise mentor figure like Master Splinter from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who was also kidnapped in the 1993 game TMNT 3: Radical Rescue. Enter Grace in Kudzu, who sees Max as her rival and strives to become Zoen's top student. This "rival" element can be likened to the dynamic seen in Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow, where the player aims to outperform their rival, Blue. With Zoen's absence in Kudzu, Grace seizes the opportunity to prove herself and show that she is better.
We're not attempting to recreate people's childhoods as it can be risky to mimic another game too closely and be seen as imitation. However, there are certain aspects, such as the art style and perspective, that bear resemblance to Link's Awakening.
There are subtle references throughout. For instance, there is a significant quest involving a gate that you must pass through. This gate design is heavily inspired by a piece of art from Super Mario Land 2. This is partly a nod to my personal enjoyment of creating a Game Boy-esque game and appealing to my inner child, while also providing hidden surprises for players who seek them out. Ultimately, though, I aim to present a world that offers a fresh and unique experience.
Kudzu, an upcoming game, could be the perfect solution for gamers seeking the nostalgia of retro games in terms of visual aesthetics, gameplay experience, and audio effects. Drawing inspiration from beloved classics like Zelda, Kudzu aims to exceed expectations and potentially thrive in the gaming industry. The anticipation lies in the feedback of players once the game is officially launched, a moment eagerly awaited. Mark your calendars for the release of Kudzu, slated for December 2023.
