The lack of personality variety in Animal Crossing: New Horizons disappointed many fans, as the villager personalities did not feel distinct from one another like in previous games. To address this, the successor to Animal Crossing: New Horizons could introduce brand-new unique personality types for villagers, adding more variety to the potential residents in the player's town.
While fans often speculate about new villager species in the Animal Crossing series, new personality types are often overlooked in community discussions. Considering that each new game introduces new villagers, it is highly likely that the next Animal Crossing installment will do the same. This presents the perfect opportunity to enhance the diversity of villager personalities by giving these new characters completely new and unique types that have not been seen before in the series. This approach could help alleviate some of the frustration players experienced with the one-dimensional characters in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
New Villager Personality Types Should Be Included in the Next Animal Crossing Game
There are currently eight personality types for villagers in the Animal Crossing series: lazy, normal, jock, peppy, cranky, snooty, smug, and big sister. These types are divided between male and female villagers, with four being male (lazy, jock, cranky, and smug) and four being female (normal, peppy, snooty, and big sister). Each type has a counterpart of the opposite gender, such as jock and peppy, which represent high energy personalities. Future games will need to introduce new personality types in pairs.
In the Animal Crossing series, a villager's personality type plays a significant role in shaping their character. It influences their favorite activities, daily routine, and interactions with other villagers. For example, jock villagers enjoy discussing sports and fitness, stay up late and wake up early, and may clash with lazy villagers. On the other hand, snooty villagers are often self-centered, prefer conversations about refined interests like fashion, stay up late and wake up late, and get along well with peppy villagers who admire their elegance.
In the Animal Crossing series, there are various complex interactions among villagers based on their personality types. However, there are certain personality traits that have not been represented yet, but deserve to be included. Currently, there is no shy personality type available in the games, which primarily rely on social interactions between villagers. Introducing this personality trait could bring an interesting dynamic to players' towns. For male and female villagers, personality types like nerdy and timid could be introduced, combining elements of the lazy and cranky types. These new personalities would feature villagers who prefer staying indoors and may appear somewhat aloof due to their introverted nature.
The Animal Crossing series has previously introduced new villager personality types, such as smug and big sister, in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Although Animal Crossing: New Horizons did not include any new personality types, it does not mean that the mechanic cannot be revisited in future titles. As Animal Crossing: New Horizons primarily focused on enhancing customization and town designing, it would be beneficial for the next installment to return to the series' roots and revamp villager interactions by introducing new personality types alongside new villagers.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available for Nintendo Switch.
