A newly released video showcases the visual comparison between the recently launched PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions of Red Dead Redemption and the original PS3 and Xbox 360 editions. Initially released in 2010, Red Dead Redemption gained widespread acclaim for its immersive Western setting and emotionally gripping narrative centered around the protagonist, former outlaw John Marston. The release of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 further solidified the franchise's popularity, leading many fans to desire a chance to replay the original game on modern gaming systems.
Although speculations of a complete remake of Red Dead Redemption circulated online earlier this year, Rockstar instead announced the launch of PS4 and Switch ports of the original game on August 17. This decision has received a mixed response from fans who had hoped for a more significant update to John Marston's journey. However, this new video allows players to witness how these new ports compare to the already impressive graphics of the original version.
This comparison is sourced from GTA Series Videos, a YouTube channel dedicated to Rockstar games. Their latest video showcases scenes from Red Dead Redemption played on different consoles: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One X, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. Initially, the differences between the original versions and the new ports are not drastic, but the PS4 and Switch versions display clearer textures compared to the PS3 and Xbox 360. Additionally, there appears to be a variation in color grading on the newer ports, particularly during a shot of John walking across town.
The comparison video also highlights various graphical features included in the new Red Dead Redemption ports, such as AMD FSR 2 and FXAA anti-aliasing in the PS4 version. Out of all the versions, the Xbox One X, through backward compatibility, seems to offer the most detailed graphics. However, the Nintendo Switch port appears slightly blurry when compared to both Xbox One X and PS4. The new ports of Red Dead Redemption also include the Undead Nightmare DLC expansion, which was used to assess their graphical capabilities.
The newly released Red Dead Redemption ports, being upscaled versions of a previous console generation game, may not come as a significant surprise that the disparities with the classic Xbox 360 and PS3 releases are relatively minor. Nevertheless, the new Red Dead Redemption ports do exhibit a distinct graphical enhancement. Whether this improvement justifies the ports' release at a complete price of $50 is a decision best left to the consumers themselves. Red Dead Redemption is currently available for PS3, PS4, Switch, and Xbox 360.
