The mod completely revamps the user interface of the game to mimic Sonic Rush. This includes the ring counter, timer, and boost meter. Additionally, it modifies Sonic's character model and brings in Rush's abilities.
Fans have been highly impressed by the modder's dedication and the relatively short period it took them to create this type of mod. Many view it as a potential unofficial Sonic Rush 3 and a promising beginning for the modding community within Superstars.
A modder from Sonic Superstars showcases a mod that gives the game a Sonic Rush theme, providing a gameplay experience similar to the Nintendo DS exclusive spin-off. Sonic Superstars, which was released earlier this month, pays homage to the classic 2D games from the Sega Genesis era as well as 2017's Sonic Mania. In addition to this, Superstars introduces fresh gameplay elements, such as the Chaos Emeralds possessing distinctive powers, setting it apart from other games. Despite being available for only a week, mods for the 2D platformer are already in progress, with one specific mod aiming to recreate the gameplay of Sonic Rush, another 2D Sonic game. Sonic Rush, released in 2005 exclusively for the Nintendo DS, returned the franchise to its 2D roots while incorporating modern features, much like the Sonic Advance trilogy on the Game Boy Advance that preceded it. By utilizing the handheld console's dual screens and introducing mechanics like Blaze the Cat and the Boost mechanic, Sonic Rush became a notable entry in the series. Although not universally acclaimed, Sonic Rush has amassed a considerable fan base dedicated to recreating its distinctive gameplay and artistic style. This is exemplified by an ongoing development of a Sonic Rush conversion mod for Superstars.
The creator of this Sonic Superstars mod, Beatz, released a preview video showcasing their early progress. In the video, they demonstrate their overhaul of the game's UI elements, bringing them closer to the design of Sonic Rush. This includes revamping the ring counter, timer, and boost meter. Not only that, but Beatz also changes Sonic's classic-styled model to the more modern yet retro one from Rush. In addition, they incorporate Rush's unique mechanics, such as the ability to perform tricks after a jump, the Boost feature, and even an aerial boost.
Beatz's efforts in converting the gameplay of Sonic Rush into Sonic Superstars have garnered impressed comments from many. The amount of coding required to make the mechanics work has been especially notable. Fans have also quickly noticed how a mod of this style was created in a relatively short amount of time, even though it is still an early version. Despite being a work-in-progress, the mod shows great promise and indicates a strong start to the modding scene for Superstars.
Sonic Rush, along with its sequels Sonic Rush Adventure and Sonic Colors, is one of the 2D handheld games in the Sonic the Hedgehog series that were only available on older Nintendo consoles. This mod could be seen as the closest fans have gotten to a brand-new Sonic Rush game, with some enthusiasts even referring to it as "Sonic Rush 3." Given that both Superstars and Rush share a similar 2.5D presentation, this nickname is fitting.
Sonic Superstars is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
