In Chaos on Wheels, cars equipped with weapons become humanity's last defense against the rogue AI Helios. This vehicular destruction game transforms into a desperate final attempt by society to stop the robot menace. Players will have the opportunity to customize their cars with a variety of weapons, armor, and paint jobs to take on the nefarious robot forces. However, Chaos on Wheels offers more than just car-on-car mayhem. It includes a range of features to enhance the overall gaming experience, going beyond the typical "guns on top of cars" mechanic. Dominik Čondić of Acodeon recently discussed the intricacies of vehicular combat in Chaos on Wheels with Game Rant.
Car Focus Streamlines Mechanics
Chaos on Wheels is distinguished as a car combat game rather than a vehicle combat game, exclusively featuring cars instead of helicopters or tanks.
However, the absence of specialized vehicles in favor of car-on-car destruction led to the development of more streamlined mechanics in the game. In contrast to the gameplay of Twisted Metal, where weapons are divided between exclusive car abilities and pickups, Chaos on Wheels allows players to equip their cars with up to four different types of weapons, not including potential pickups. According to Čondić, specific parts of each car are designated for both armor and weapon components. The main gun (LMB) and standard rockets (RMB), which players can manually aim, are located on the car's roof. The front of the car is equipped with two other guns (CTRL) that fire based on the car's general direction. Additionally, all cars have the ability to fire homing missiles (Q).
At first, the abundance of weapons may seem excessive, but they align with the game's emphasis on environmental destruction. In both the arcade Chaos Career and story-based Chaos Campaign modes, players not only battle hordes of AI-controlled cars but also encounter stationary turrets that pose additional hazards in the environment. Players can further enhance their cars' destructive capabilities through pickups and Driver Abilities. Each Driver in the game's roster offers special buffs, such as Nitro and Shields (SHIFT), while Special Rocket pickups can provide specific effects to the RMB Rockets. The variety of armament combinations available both inside and outside of combat reflects the game's focus on car customization.
The Pursuit Of Customizable Chaos
Čondić also emphasized the team's focus on expanding customization options after the game is launched. Many players find themselves drawn to the Chaos Garage, where they can explore countless options for weapons and armor, sometimes even more than they enjoy the actual gameplay modes. To enhance the customization experience, Čondić mentioned their plans to introduce additional features like unique decals and a wider range of armor choices. Additionally, while shooting a car gradually removes its armor visuals, Acodeon intends to implement destructible armor that is specific to certain parts of the vehicle.
The inspiration for this emphasis on customization comes from Twisted Metal, which played a crucial role in shaping Chaos on Wheels. Čondić fondly remembers playing Twisted Metal as a child but always wished he could personalize the appearance of his cars. This desire aligns with Čondić's advice to Chaos on Wheels players, who are in constant pursuit of the perfect vehicle for demolishing cars - it ultimately boils down to personal preference.
