Highlights
Remnant 2 offers players quality-of-life features and mechanics to customize their gameplay experience.
The content includes features such as unlimited stamina when not in combat, automatic item prompts dismissal, and the ability to cancel animations with a roll.
Additionally, the game offers a model viewer, a favorite feature for managing inventory, and the possibility of unlocking hidden archetypes.
Although Remnant 2 is often compared to 'Dark Souls with guns', it is not excessively difficult in every aspect. While combat can be particularly challenging, especially on higher difficulty levels, the game provides players with various options and quality-of-life features to customize their experience according to their preferences.
These features range from minor conveniences to significant mechanics that greatly enhance a player's overall enjoyment of the game. Let's explore some of the top quality-of-life features and mechanics Remnant 2 has to offer.
8 Giving Players Unlimited Stamina Outside Of Combat
The most significant change Gunfire Games has made between Remnant: From the Ashes and Remnant 2 is the addition of unlimited stamina for players outside of combat. While this change may seem minor, it eliminates the tedious task of constantly managing stamina while exploring or backtracking through the map. This improvement greatly enhances the overall experience, especially since the secrets in the sequel are more intricate and well-hidden, requiring players to spend more time running around the maps. Therefore, this feature is a true blessing for players.
7 Auto Dismiss Item Prompts
In Remnant: From the Ashes, players may not have realized a minor inconvenience that has been addressed in the second game. Now, they have the option to appreciate the convenience or be grateful for the ability to choose. By default, the Item Pickup Prompt in the game is manual. This means that whenever players pick up Trait Books, Rings, Boss Materials, or any other items, the 'obtained' prompt remains on screen until players close the popup by pressing a specific input.
Initially, some players may have wondered why this feature was necessary. In Remnant: From the Ashes, players would often collect items while rushing through an area or after defeating bosses, sometimes receiving multiple items at once. In the midst of focusing on survival and avoiding attacks, they would miss out on seeing the name of the item before it disappeared from the screen in a split second. Consequently, players would then have to search through their inventory to locate the newly acquired item, which could be even more challenging if they had obtained several items without inspecting them.
6 Making Fashion Over Function A Reality
Players who are familiar with the term 'Fashion Souls' from playing Soulslikes know that it refers to wearing certain combinations of armor sets based on appearance rather than functionality. The prioritization of aesthetics over practicality allows players to freely choose the coolest-looking armor sets in these games, especially when the in-game systems place less importance on them.
It goes without saying that players feel more attached to their player character when they like how it looks. This attachment, in turn, strengthens their overall fondness for Remnant 2. While it is worth noting that each armor piece in Remnant 2 still carries weight and resistance factors, players have greater individuality in this game compared to the first, where most players gravitated towards the Elder or Slayer Set for their overpowering Set Bonuses.
5 The Ability To Roll-Cancel Out Of Any Action
Being stuck in an animation with impending death looming is a dreadful experience in games. Some games purposely implement this to create a sense of gravity for each decision made by players. While it may be justifiable, this mechanic generally doesn't sit well with newcomers to the Soulslike subgenre. However, Remnant 2 is slightly more forgiving in this aspect. Players have the advantage of using their dodge roll or backstep to interrupt nearly any Consumable animation. This proves most useful during boss battles when players mistakenly choose to heal using their Relic at an inopportune moment. They can quickly dodge roll again to survive, while also avoiding wasting a valuable Relic.
4 The 'Inspect' Model Viewer
People often underestimate the true value of a well-designed model viewer in a game until they encounter a visually stunning game that lacks one. Fortunately, Remant 2 offers a high-quality model viewer that surpasses expectations. The Inspect feature allows players to marvel at the intricate details of various collectible items, such as amulets, rings, guns, armor sets, and key items. Additionally, players can customize their firearms with weapon mods, and the model viewer enables them to appreciate these modifications in beautiful high-resolution. The rings, in particular, showcase an extraordinary level of intricacy, while the diverse Weapon Mods from different worlds transform the appearance of the applied guns in distinct and remarkable ways, complementing the game's overall visual style.
3 The 'Favorite' Feature
Inventory management in Remnant 2 poses both advantages and disadvantages. Currently, there is no sorting feature for the player's inventory, as it is not necessary until players accumulate a substantial number of rings and guns. However, this absence of sorting functionality can become troublesome when attempting to switch items, particularly with Relic Fragments, rings, and armor. The rapid progression from having no items to possessing over 20 further compounds this inconvenience.
Thankfully, players can use the 'Favorite' feature to supplement this to some extent. However, it is important to note that this feature does not apply to Relic Fragments specifically. Moreover, it only organizes the items by placing the favorited ones before the unfavorited ones. It does not provide the option for players to arrange the order in which these items appear or filter out specific items when searching for something specific to equip.
2 Auto-Equipping Unslotted Or Upgraded
In Remnant 2, players often find themselves overwhelmed by the multitude of choices when it comes to items and options. With a wide array of guns, rings, amulets, mutators, weapon mods, gear, archetypes, concoctions, melee weapons, relics, and relic fragments, decision-making becomes a constant struggle. Managing it all requires frequent visits to the Inventory, carefully evaluating the descriptions of each item.
Thankfully,
1 New Characters As Hidden Archetypes
, Remnant 2 offers a convenient feature that automatically equips items into any empty slots. This allows players to intentionally leave a Ring Slot empty if they are satisfied without it, so they can immediately equip a newly acquired one. Furthermore, the game also automatically equips upgraded versions of currently equipped gear. This feature is particularly noticeable when dealing with Relic Fragments, making it much easier for players to manage the large quantity of Fragments they quickly collect.
This final quality-of-life enhancement primarily focuses on one of the new features of Remnant 2, which sets it apart from the original Remnant: From the Ashes - Archetypes. Archetypes essentially serve as the equivalent of a 'class' system found in other games. Each archetype offers a range of passive perks, traits, and abilities that players unlock gradually as they level it up. In addition to the starting five classes (including Gunslinger), Remnant 2 also introduces a couple of hidden archetypes, often paying homage to specific builds or playstyles from the previous game. The exciting part is that once players unlock any of these hidden archetypes, they will have the option to select that archetype as their starting class when creating a new character.
The convenience of this is because players no longer need to repeat the unlocking process if they want to obtain the Archetype on a new character or a Hardcore character. The method of unlocking the Archetype determines whether it requires skill or luck. It is important to note that in this game, all players receive a copy of any item that is picked up by another player (excluding Ammo Pickups). Therefore, players can join their friends who are about to acquire an Archetype by defeating a boss or completing a certain task, without needing to switch to a different character. Remnant 2 is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
